XPS 8500 UEFI boot

I was doing some prep for Windows 8 upgrade.
I went into the Legacy BIOS settings and switched to UEFI (because my understanding is that allows Windows 8 to use Secure Boot feature).
On restart, the computer stopped with a message that said something like "no bootable device found".

Anyone else have this issue?

The BIOS version to A09.

Thanks!

Wouldn't it be easier just to do a clean install?

Hi,

I do not believe the XPS 8500 motherboard is UEFI supported. In the system setup you can enter the bios mode and change from Legacy to UEFI, but if the "Load Legacy OPROM is permanently enabled (that is you cannot alter it) then the motherboard is not fitted with the UEFI capabilities. You may want to determine your board's model (using AIDA64 Extreme or CPU-Z utility) and research to find out if the board is UEFI supported...

I ordered my XPS8500 directly from Dell with Bios ver. A06 and Win 7 Home Premium preinstalled. The first action I took was take an image copy of my boot disk and then wen into the system setup; the bios was in legacy mode (the factory default). Also, try the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and study the output report; it might say something like "Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC". That refers to the motherboard.

my motherboard model is: OYJPT1 v.A00. IvyBridge v.09,  Southbridge H77 v. 04. I will be searching to see if this model has UEFI support. Though I must admit, it is not a priority or issue at the moment. I'd like to know before a do a fresh install of Win8 (upgrade from Win7 stable so far.)

Thank you

I reinstalled Win 7 after changing the BIOS to UEFI.  You have to delete all partitions on the boot drive to reinstall in UEFI or you get the message that there is no boot drive.  After installing in UEFI mode, there was a post that explained how to confirm that Win 7 was installed in UEFI mode.  I ran the command from a command prompt and confirmed that it was installed in UEFI mode.

... I don't want to lose factory installed applications...

That shouldn't be a deciding factor in switching to UEFI if you really want to make that change. You should be able to download the software that came pre-installed on your system from here. NOTE: I believe there's a download limit of 3 times per app.

I asked last night, in another thread here,

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19476394/20230635.aspx#20230635

how to turn off UEFI boot in my XPS 8500 that is supposed to arrive late this afternoon.  UEFI is a nightmare. Linux does not yet have a key from Microsoft so you cannot dual boot and you also cannot dual boot with XP or Vista either if in UEFI mode. UEFI is a total joke as far as enhanced security as root kits have already been developed for it...everyone should know by now that computer security resides with the user not the OS.  UEFI just makes it so Linux is no threat to Microsoft (at least until Microsoft grants Linux the key they have asked for).

I was told in my thread last night by a Dell employee:

"All present Dell systems are shipped with UEFI BIOS.  There is an option to disable UEFI in the BIOS screen.  In the BIOS screen under ‘BOOT’ tab, click on ‘Boot mode’ to disable UEFI and use the system in Legacy mode. However I would like to know the reason you want to disable it."

I further asked if I would need to reinstall Windows 8 in legacy mode and I asked, if so, why was Dell not shipping the Reinstallation disk with the machine? The Dell employee did not answer this question.

So, will I have to reinstall Windows 8 in legacy mode? If so, am I supposed to fill out the form for Windows 7 to request the Reinstallation disk (as soon as I have the machine and find my tag number which is required on the form)?

How soon will I receive the Reinstallation disk?

I think this question has been answered. From reading carefully here and doing my own research, I think that if starting from scratch (empty drive) the UEFI could be enabled and Windows installed to support Secure Boot. Since I don't really want to start from scratch, and since I don't want to lose factory installed applications, I am planning to proceed with an in-place upgrade. As suggested above, if I ever do a clean install of windows (like, if I get an SSD in the future), I can attempt to switch to UEFI at that point.

Thanks!

I ordered a new XPS 8500 Special Edition with 32 SSD disk.  I went through the initial set up but I can't boot up the computer after first restart.  I returned the computer and ordered another one.  I had the same issue with the second computer.  I called the support and we have to re-install the Windows 8 from DVD with 'Boot Mode: Legacy' and 'Secure Boot: Disabled'.  With this setting, I can't use 32 SSD as cache.

The technician told me that in order to change 'Boot Mode: UEFI' and 'Secure Boot: Enabled', I have to re-install the OS again.  Is there anyway I can change the Boot Mode to UEFI and Secure Boot to Enabled without re-install the OS?

I ordered XPS 8500 with 256 SSD and 3TB hard drive in January. The system was setup with UEFI secure boot. I added my own 1.5TB Seagate HD and the system worked fine for 40 days. Then it started having a strange problem. The system showed "Preparing Automatic Repair" after a Windows Update.

I've spent almost two weeks with Dell Tech Support and tried all kinds of BIOS settings ... ~7 times reinstalling Windows 8 OS. I was able to install Windows 8 OS and then plugin my 1.5TB. It will work until the next Windows Update KB2267602 which is the update for ""Windows Defender Definition". Even the motherboard was replaced 2 days ago.

Few bizarre things

1) KB2267602 update appears on the next day after installing the OS. So far I have received it almost every day with different version numbers.

2) If I unplug the 1.5TB drive and restart the machine it will work. Then I can plug it again.

3) After the KB2267602 update is applied and if I do a "Cold Reboot" (cut off the power supply) it will work. In this case no need to unplug the 1.5TB.

4) Setting up secure boot is a tricky process. Just enabling it will not work.

Dell couldn't figure out what's causing the problem. They claim that system will work without 1.5TB and asked me to get help from Microsoft.

Dell's recommendations to resolve the issue...

1) Buy McAfee / Norton antivirus and block Defender update

2) Buy a powerful power supply

3) Use legacy boot

4) Use an external USB based HD instead of internal one.

BTW, one of the tech support guy mentioned that XPS 8500 was not designed for Windows 8. Dell made some changes to make the system work with Windows 8.

Legacy vs UEFI, UEFI boots much faster and is more secure. Your Factory Recover CD will load both. YOU have to Repartition the hard drive. (UEFI places 4 partitions on the drive) Also in your case UEFI supports partition sizes over 2 TB. Go to the 1.5 TB drive manufacture and make sure your device is Win 8 32/64 compatible(just in case), BUT see if there is a firmware or driver update.
