XPS 8700 nVidia GTX video card upgrades,

Now that the XPS A10 8700 BIOS update is out, Chris-M would like to close the long Black screen of death thread.

Let's use this to post successes and links out to other forums with tips, tricks and how-to-resolve issues with high-end nVidia GTX cards.

This will help others choose wisely or perhaps find a solution to an already solved problem.

In the body of your post, if you have upgraded to a high-end nVidia GTX graphics card, please list the following.

* specific video card
* exact driver version
* Brand monitor and resolution and cable type: HDMI, DVI, Display Port or (yikes) VGA
* specific power supply you are using if you upgraded or indicate Stock Dell 460W.

Ask questions, link to benchmarks, describe what has gone well and reflect on what you might have done differently.

I encourage AMD owners to start a similar discussion, but let us keep this thread to high end nVidia GTX cards only.

High end should imply above and beyond what Dell has shipped, or more than a GTX 660 or GTX 750ti.

GTX 760, 770, 780, 780ti, 970 and 980 graphics cards are what I would consider high-end.

I don't see the GT 720 on nVidia's list of supported GPUs.

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/4k/supported-gpus

The GTX 745 isn't listed on that page but there are some comments in the footnotes for 4K monitor support.

GT 720 also has comments in the foot notes.

That's because those listed support cinema 4k,which is 4096 X 2160 @ 24hz+, most monitors that advertise 4k aren't usually talking about cinema, but rather 3840 X 2160.

Excellent list Btw.

660 TI or 270x can get HIGH at 1080p for ~100 bux on the standard power supply. Can't beat that!

960/970 can take it a bit further at 200 or 300 bux.

1.  Upgrade BIOS to a10 via downloads page

2.  Plug in new card.

3.  Play games.

745 4gb ddr3 has about a 2500 passmark score.

my 660 Ti I got for 100 bucks had a 5000 passmark score.

The i7 Integrated GpU has a 750 passmark score.

tbh im not too scared about the warranty thing every companie is like that "dont open the box or warranty will be voided" but to be honest it does need a better gpu and the companie should at least make the machine capable of using better gpus (meanng the bios a10 upgrade) because its a pc not a gaming console you have to update it to keep up with the newer stuff

This is kind of frustrating...

I phoned up the tech support for my XPS8700 I received less than 3 months ago for some minor issues...I took this opportunity to ask him to update, remotely, BIOS and anything which required an update (he did, like chipset...). I told him that I wanted to change my graphic card to GTX960.

The guy clearly said that I should ONLY use dell to supply AND fit the new card as if I decided to change it myself, it would "invalidate" my dell warranty... so he put me through to sell team.

When I asked him if Dell sell GTX960, he went : "NO ! anyway, why do you want to change your 4GB GTX745 for an only 2GB GTX960 !?"

I know that GTX960 is NOT 970/980 but still, how can he not know that 745 has very poor benchmark in gaming performance? they sell this stuff not me! it was silly of me not to get the gtx750ti in the first place.

I read, today again in this post, that some of you are like me NEW owner of XPS8700 who want to change the GPU...are you not bother about this warranty/support being void ?!

I wasn't concerned about the warranty when I upgraded PSU and graphics card, and in fact sold my graphics card on eBay and put another in a family member's low-end system for a slight boost.

That said, a GTX 960 does not need a new PSU, just the A10 BIOS, but I can't expect Dell Tech support to know this.

Adding a 960 is perhaps the easiest drop-in upgrade you can do to improve gaming, and for 1080p monitors it should do well.

A GTX 970 is almost as easy. Some are using the OEM power supply some have upgraded. This debate won't end so I'll call it personal preference. Personally, I prefer a higher end PSU and was willing to invest, and I put the Dell PSU in a hand-me-down system.

At the end of the day I will most probably update the GPU with GTX960. I am still waiting few weeks to see if a GTX960ti, hopefully still useable with our OEM PSU, is released as rumors/insiders seem to tell, doesn't exist yet, so...but will see benchmark vs. price to decide on that. At least my Bios update is done.

Still really annoying to know that changing GPU will void my dell warranty.

well tbh i say wait a couple of weeks use the pc for a little see how it works to see if theres any defects and after a while if it didnt go wrong and screw up on ya you should be fine to upgrade it unless you screw something up on your own thats a whole other thing

Just to let you know, I got my new XPS 8700 Monday and the older bios version was installed (A09). Once I downloaded the  A10 version my 970 worked like a charm.
