Introduced in September 2012 by Rackspace and NASA, OpenStack has evolved dramatically. Particularly, it has gained increased attention because large corporations are starting to adopt this for their private cloud and some have established a successful public cloud using OpenStack. Another interesting development is that large corporations are collaborating with the OpenStack Foundation and the open source community, contributing code for every major release of OpenStack. EMC’s competitors are coming up with their own edition of OpenStack in order to reduce the complexity of installation and maintenance.
