Adding Storage

Hi.

I have a G3 laptop iCore5 - I’d like to add additional storage. My understanding is that the G3 comes with a slot to hold a hard drive but can I use that slot to hold an additional SSD?

Will the machine be able to run the following HDD and which is better:

WD 1TB 5400RPM SATA Laptop Internal Hard Drive (WDBMYH0010BNC-NRSN)

Seagate BarraCuda 1TB 2.5" SATA Laptop Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LMA48)

If I can run an SDD in the available slot, which would you recommend?

thanks very much

There is more than one G3 model -- you can look up the exact specifications by using the service tag at dell.com/support.

In terms of performance, any SSD will beat any hard drive.  Of course, that comes as a cost, but the disparity between the cost of an SSD and a hard drive is lower than it ever has been.

If you do decide on a hard drive, both WD and Toshiba have far better records for reliability than Seagate in the 2.5" market.

You will want to open the system and verify that the bracket, screws and cable needed to mount a 2.5" drive are present -- most often, systems ordered without a 2.5" drive won't have these.  In that case you will need to contact Dell Spare Parts to order the mounting hardware -- in the US, 1-800-357-3355.

Thanks for that answer - I will check using the service tag.  Do you know if I can mount a SSD in the slot provided for the HDD?

Yes, you can, subject to the mounting hardware being present (or purchasing it).  The same hardware is required for either a hard drive or an SSD.

Brilliant! Thank you.

So the last thing to determine is if my model can support 1 or 2 TB in SSD format and of course to order the mounting hardware.
