Inspiron 5593 - Keyboard keys not working at times

I purchased the new Dell Inspiron 5593, i5 a month back.

Recently i have started noticing issues with few keys in the lower end of the inbuilt keyboard.

Keys such as the spacebar, b, n, right, left, down and 2 in the numberpad aren't working occasionally. It's more like they freeze and require multiple attempts to get them to work. and even then it runs on one tap ( e.g when i tap b once it appears as 'bbbb' on screen.

I tried updating the bios, checking for the status of keyboard through f12 mode. it works fine when i'm troubleshooting as well.

It's really frustrating when i'm constantly working.

@Anonymous

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi gk170

On page 6 of this forum someone suggested reinstalling the wireless mouse driver if you have one. I did that today and my keyboard has been behaving for the last few hours.

Try that and see if it works.

I have had my Dell 5593 for 18 months before it started with this issue. I have had the same wireless mouse for the same period of time so it doesn't make any sense but it seems to have sorted out the problem.

I will update if my keyboard stops working again.

UPDATE

After a few hours of reinstalling the wireless mouse driver the problem started again. I unplugged it and changed to a wired mouse and since then no issue. It's been almost day now and it is still behaving.

I honestly think it's a software problem. I found a really interesting case for my keyboard. The b, n, space, left arrow, down arrow, right arrow, right alt and / are not working, but if I press the combination of backspace+space+any of not working key.... they start working but different letters are displayed:

for b it displays "t"

for n it displays "y"

for left arrow it displays "," etc.

So the keyboard works and it's responsive, but there are some software issues that probably make the functions for keys collide or something like that.

Hi everyone!

The keyboard of my laptop 5593 has been changed twice and the error persist. One tha warranty had finished I decide to solve the problem myself.

After analyzed the problem, at least in my case, the problem is that the battery, when all the screws are tighted deform the board of the keyboard. I put a piece of rubber in every screw and avoided to tight the screws so much. The keyboard is still alive.

If you need more info, please, tell me. I could send you some photos.

Have a nice day!

Hello Nitoma, I would be interested on having the photos. I have the same issue with 15+ computers.

Hi Nitoma,

I recently started to have the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 5593 keys. I bought my laptop in October 2020 and the problem started in April 2022. Can you please provide me with more information and pictures of how you solved the issue?

Also, since you solved it, is it still working for you up to now?

Hoping to hear back from you soon.

My response may be somewhere in this thread or another thread I forget, but basically I sent it to Dell and they replaced the palm rest, not the keyboard, and it's been flawless since.   This is over a year ago and no problems.

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem. Bought my Inspiron in November 2019, at some point during lockdown the problems with b, n, space etc etc started.

The problem persists, if I run the machine on Linux (tried booting off a USB stick).

I had my keyboard changed by Dell and a couple of months (?) later - and obviously just after the end of the warranty - the problem came back.

I'm using an external keyboard at the moment, but it is so  annoying to have to carry that around wherever I go.

If anyone (Nitoma?) can share a workable (and hopefully permanent) solution, I'd be very thankful! I'd like for this computer to run a few more years before I throw it in the bin and never buy Dell ever again.
