Inspiron 7580 problem with Nvidia MX150 and external monitor

Hi,

I've just bought a new Inspiron 15 7580 and cannot enable Nvidia MX150 graphics for my external monitor.

Settings/system/monitor sees the extarnal screen and I can use it but only with the internal Intel UHD Graphics 620.

How do I get the system to use Nvidia for the HDMI-connected AOC i2352Vh?

Starting to tear my hair out here (can't afford to do that!)

You cannot, at least not directly.  All video data in this system passes through the Intel GPU on its way to the screen.  You should still be able to run whichever applications you wish using the nVidia GPU - but it will not have direct output to the screen, as only the Intel GPU has a physical connection to the display (internal or external).

There are systems that do have the external output hardwired to the nVidia GPU but you need to step up to the XPS models before you have that option.  At least some of the newer G-series gaming systems have that as well - but your Inspiron does not.

Thanks ejn63,

Leaves me feeling a little cheated as my Inspiron 15 from 2011 which I am still using has Nvidia graphics which drive the HDMI-connected screen.

There was no indication in all the documentation about how the GPUs work (in the way you describe), at least as far as I had read. Funny thing; the Nvidia GPU was a big factor in deciding on this particular model.  Ho hum.

Thanks again for the information.

A 2011 system pre-dates the advent of hybrid video -- so it likely has a hardwired display direct to the nVidia GPU.

In 2018, the systems that still have hardwired discrete video (or firmware-switchable video) are mostly higher-end system - the upper mid-range XPS and high end Precision and Alienware models, and competing models from other manufacturers.

The Inspiron systems are all low- to lower-mid range systems - they're almost exclusively software controlled hybrids.
