Laptop video playback bug

I am experiencing a really strange error when playing any video (downloaded video or streaming e.g. netflix, youtube).

I connect headphones to my laptop via a wireless USB dongle. When playing video with the headphones connected, the video and audio works perfectly. However, when i disconnect the USB dongle, and try to play video, it doesnt play at all. A video will load if I select one, say on Netflix, but it just wont play at all. Then when i reconnect the headset via the USB dongle, the video will start playing again.

I have tried restarting my laptop with the USB dongle disconnected, and this doesnt resolve the issue. I have even uninstalled the headset drivers to try and remove any history of the headset being connected to my laptop, and the video still wont play at all.

It feels like a really strange bug, any help on how i can fix this would be appreciated as I want to be able to watch video without having to connect my headset.

Thanks

Removing and Reinstalling Video Compression

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
    Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.

  4. In the Components area, scroll to and click Multimedia.

  5. Click Details.

  6. If the Video Compression option is selected, it may not be installed
properly, and needs to be removed. Follow these steps:

    1. Clear the check box for this option, and then click OK.

    2. Click OK again to complete the removal.

    3. Repeat steps 2-5 to return to the Video Compression option in
      Add/Remove Programs.

  7. Make sure the Video Compression box contains a check mark.

  8. Click OK, then click OK again. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Hi Adrian,

I am using windows 11, when following the steps you posted I dont have the same options available to click. Do you know the steps to follow using windows 11? (E.g. when going to add/remove programmes within the control panel, there isnt an option to click "windows setup tab"

Cheers

Wow, flat out ignored by Dell Support. I need the answer to this question also... The instructions given don't apply to Windows 10 or 11. Now what?
