Possible solution for FPS drops on G7 7700 / G5 Laptops

I have recently bought a Dell G7 7700 gaming laptop with the following specs

G7 7700 17.3", 2020 built
CPU: i7-10750H
RAM: 16GB DDR4 2933MHz
GPU: GeForce RTX 2070 Super
SSD: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO
PlusWindows 10 Home version 2004
All latest windows updates and drivers installed

As many other people before (see threads 12, and many more) I have experienced severe FPS drops in various recent games, even on medium graphic settings (games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare / Warzone, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fortnite, even in Path of Exile).

What does that mean? I play most of these games on medium to high settings and after around 30 min of playing, the framerates suddenly drop from usually around 120+ to around 10 FPS, making the game absolutely unplayable. Pressing the "G Button" on the left upper side of the keyboard helps for a few moments, before the Throttling sets in again.

Weirdest thing is: This happens with pretty low GPU and CPU temperatures, as they always hover around 70-75°C in these games. This (and the many threads from people with similar issues) indicate a software issue to me which needs to be solved by Dell asap.

Possible solution (at least it solved the issue for me):

  1. Update to the latest BIOS via the official Dell page

  2. Update all Windows and system drivers to the lastest version

  3. Restart your Laptop and go to BIOS by pressing F12 on startup

  4. Enter "BIOS Setup", go to the "Power" tab and set your power profile to "Primarily AC Use"

  5. (Additionally you can set the thermal mode in BIOS to "Ultra Performance")

  6. Turn off "Intel SpeedStep" in BIOS as well as "Intel Turbo Boost"

  7. And most importantly: Turn off "Enable Adaptive C-States for Discrete Graphics"

The last thing ("Adaptive C States") solved the FPS drops for me. Intel Turbo Boost can be enabled, but I noticed the Laptop getting much hotter with it without a significant FPS increase, so I'd recommend to turn it off if not really needed.

Obviously this is pretty rediculous for a 1900€ gaming rig and you will lose quite some performance by doing the steps above. Also customers should not be doing days of troubleshooting and fiddling with settings. Most users will just send the thing back and chose a different model.

Would be nice if anyone with similar FPS problems tries this and gives me feedback if it works. I will keep on testing it with other games as well.

Hello, i have the Same Problem as the other User. I own a new g7 7700 i7 10750 with rtx 2070 super, win 10 home After some gaming the frequence is reduced from 50 FPS to under 20 FPS. My question: ist there a more elegant was than changing the BIOS. What Changes are necessary top use it as a gaming device (Sold for gaming)?

I haven't found anything. I still have the FPS issue but not as bad. And there's been so much done to this computer I couldn't even begin to know which thing helped.

Sorry

Hi guys,

Head on over to this thread and have a read...a lot of us have found solutions to this issue, by using tools such as MSI Afterburner to limit the GPU voltage and keep it from overclocking up to 1900mhz etc. which I believe is the cause of massive frame rate drop. CPU going up to 100C+ can also trigger it from my experience.

My laptop now runs flawlessly, aside from getting a little hot, which is normal for gaming laptops. Cooling pad will help a bit with that, or a fan on it.

Thank you!! I'll try out some of these things and see what happens. Haven't been gaming (or anything else) lately because...life LOL! But I will get to it soon and report back!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
