Upgrading RAM in my Dell Laptop

So i have a Dell Inspiron 3542 i5-4210U and Geforce 820M gpu with 4gb ram. According to intel spec sheet, it says that max ram supported is 16gb, but ive seen other threads in the community that says to upgrade to 8Gb ram only.

May i know the reason as to why i should install only 8GB, and will a 16GB stick work on my laptop?
