ATI cards in the 8600s?

Hi there,

I'll be looking to get a laptop in the next 6-8 months, and I'm really considering the Inspiron 8600.  The only thing I'm not too terribly excited about is the 128 meg Nvidia card.  Is there any chance of Dell bringing the option of a 128 meg ATI card (such as the Radeon 9600)?

Just curious,

Tim

What are the chances we could get a Frech speaking person to try to get a 9600 from France and try it in their i8600 and/or a i8500?

Guess we know how Dell feels about the US... looks like Dell has sided with the French and Germans...

Yeah, that is pretty pissy that Dell released the 9600 to France first.  We make all this noise and invest unhealthy portions of our time b!tch!ng about this and they give it to the French.  WHAT DO THEY CARE ABOUT THIS FORSAKEN CARD???  They just want to eat cheese and drink wine.  Everyone knows that American's couch bound ASSEtS consume all the gratuitous violence in media (including games) which is what this gfx card is all about--getting the most realistic fragfest on your laptop.  Geeze, we'll probably end up getting the optional cheese knife and wine bottle opener for the 8600 before the French do....  Get a clue Dell.  (Please don't take offence to my comments about the French.  I am descended from France myself--the offenses could have been much worse :-)).

Zero. Dell Europe (barring one or two of the Scandinavian countries) flatly refuse to sell video separately.

On a another note, it's amazing how willing people are to see conspiracy theories. Dell sells 9600XT in  France first=Dell loves Frenchies and hates Yanks. No. France is a much smaller market than the US and rolling out a new product with limited supply is much more feasible in smaller markets such as France and Germany.

What's the big deal about the ATI vs the NVidia in the 8600? Is there something you can't do with the fx 5650 that you can with the m10?

Not only in FRENCH, but also in Spain

http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config/frameset.asp?s=esdhs&l=es&m=eur&c=3344&n=3342&cu=esdhs&v=d&cc=&ogn=&kcd=&ad=&mc=p&rs=&cuid=&cg=&pch=1&pn=-1&demo=&gc=&sbc=esdhs&co=&b=46530

My I8600 was shipped, now I am thinking if I will return for some configuration but ATI video card... I do not know...Maybe will appear another several problems with ATI (Power, Cooling, Prof. Application....etc.etc.etc...)

Regards,

ATTENTION!!!

For all those interested in getting a Radeon 9600 in the 8600 (as I am).

I have looked into it in some detail, and I do NOT believe that the page on the French website is correct -- I believe it is a copy error.

On one page, you have choices to look at the 1.4Ghz Pentium M model 8600, the 1.5GHz model, the 1.7GHz model, etc. If you look everything except the 1.5GHz model, they all show the NVidia chip. If you look at the 1.5GHz model, it shows the Radeon video card, but then if you click on "Details" it again shows the NVidia chip. If you notice, that line on the front page is part of the hardcoded HTML -- perhaps at one time they were considering to offer it, or perhaps they are going to in the future. But I do not believe that it is currently being offered with the Radeon even in France.
