Beep from the HD area on M1530

Hey,

I've got an m1530 with what I think is a HD that beeps from time to time.   It makes a beep, then clicks, then goes on its merry way?

Questions you may ask:

Q Is the sound coming out of the speakers?
A I dont think so, you even get it when you have headphones plugged in.

Q Whats it sound like?
A It sounds like a pretty hight note, maybe an E sharp, and it lasts about 1 second.

Q Any other issues?
A None that I can spot, HD seems to spin the rest of the time.

But that's just ignoring the problem, not fixing it. What if the drive starts beeping every few minutes and is about to fail but you don't know because you can't hear it?

I'd rather know there was something up and get it fixed.
Has anyone had their drive changed because of the beep yet?

I have this exact same problem.

I have run the Dell Diagnostics and it found no errors.

If you have a Samsung HD you can try the following Samsung HD Tools to also test your HD ... http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/ES_Tool.html

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html

To date I have reformatted my hard drive and have slowly been reinstalling my drivers/apps (as well as creating HD images on my laptop at each step).  The beeping disappeared for a few days (this is when my laptop was at it's most basic form). Slowly each driver and app has been reinstalled and now this morning the "single beep and click" has returned.

I will continue to test this but my initial thoughts MAYBE that this is not a HD issue but more of a driver or app issue.  I have just bought a second HD (identical to the one in my laptop - Samsung Spinpoint M65 HM320JI) and will run this with my latest image also to see if the "beeping and clicking" returns.

Has anyone else had any results from testing or from Dell's "support"?

Wow, I hate to bump this sooo long since the last post, but this beeping is really annoying. 1 tone, almost daily, never at the same time, under load or totally idle. What in the world is this?

It's worth bumping - I still get this beep, it's alarming - especially as the tone seems to be a bit strangled sometimes.

Maybe someone will come back with a solution that's not just muting it.

I've got an XPS M1530, 320MB HD and have been experiencing the beep/click for a couple of months.  The beep and click happens about once an evening.  It's pretty loud, but I don't have any performance issues...yet.

Thought you might appreciate suggestion I got from support chat with Dell.  They suggested reseating the HD.  I suppose this can't really hurt anything.

But based on the lack of performance or freezing issues, Dell thought there was no reason to worry.

Interestingly, my nightly beep/click has also happened both while completely idle as well as while working on the machine.

It happens once, then nothing until the next evening, though never at a given time.

I'll report back if the reseating solve the problem.  I've already reseated, just have to do my typical stuff tonight to see if the noises happen again.

hi! i had also this annoying beeps/clicks, but thought that was nothig important. however i realized that i hat to restore my system about every 3 months (i have this m1530 since may 2008) because it bacame extremly lame suddenly ?!? so i checked up my hdd with some different software (also this dell-booting-thing) and came to the conclusion that my hdd had some "sector" errors?!? then i called the dell-service, got a ne hd from fujitsu and suprise: i have no annoying sounds anymore and the performance is much better than in the past. my old hd was from samsung, "hm320JI". a fellow studen has also these problems with a different brandet-notebook... (sorry for my bad english ;) )

good luck!
