Dell Inspiron 3521 | BSOD Issues

Hi,

I recently purchased (for my sister) a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 3521, Ubuntu pre-installed), I reformatted and installed Windows 7. After the installation this laptop has given me a headaches. Its keep on crashing with BSOD.

First Install Windows 7: kept crashing each time plugged in USB or the power cable. I tried to re-check and install the drivers again after going through all the post on this forum. Then onwards, I thought it could be the problem of the RAM (as I have asked the retailer to increase the RAM to 8GB from 4GB).

So my sister called up the Customer Support and told everything about the same. They asked her to run the system diagnostics and they said there is no problem with the hardware. Then she stressed on the fact of increase in the RAM, so the CS executive asked her to arrange for a screwdriver so that they can tell her how to remove each RAM and do a trial and error thing. (Wow perfect Customer Service by Dell, I can't believe this!).

Anyways, I asked her to re-run the System Diagnostics again, as the CS Executive dint even waited for the System Diagnostics to run fully. She did that and dint find any problem. I asked her to remove the video driver for AMD Radeon and everything ran smooth without any crashes.

Because of the frequent crashes the Windows dint  boot, I installed Windows again.

Second Install Windows 7: After the install I  sincerely went to the Dell Site and downloaded the drivers and installed them in the order given in one of the post on this forum.

Everything worked fine for a day or two then again the problem started, this time not while plugging the USB though but the power cable. It doesn't shutdown when you try to shut the dam laptop down from Windows 7 instead it gives a BSOD.

Enough of hue and cry, following is a crash analysis of the .dmp file as I can understand the technical knowledge of the Dell CS Executive:

Thanks again, please suggest what could be the solution.

PS: the above experience actually spoils the fun of using a new computer when the whole day is spent with resolving the issues. I have bought many laptops  as in a HP and two Lenovo  laptops and never faced a single problem till date.  Moreover, the for these brands the CS is awesome!!

Hi,

This is being caused by the file atikmpag.sys

This file relates to your AMD graphics driver.

Therefore you need to install a more stable version of the driver which you can source from either Dell's support site or direct from AMD.

There are 2 drivers on Dell's site depending on what AMD GPU you have (Windows 7 64bit)

AMD Radeon HD 7670M (Release date - 06/02/2013)

www.dell.com/.../inspiron-15-3521

AMD Radeon HD 8730M  (Release date - 06/02/2013)

This is the link to the latest driver from AMD (Release date 5/29/2013)

Hi,

Well thanks for the reply. I installed the same graphics drivers (for my AMD 7670M graphics card) which you have mentioned here in both the Windows 7, but still I had the same problem. I m attaching a screenshot of the device manager with the driver version.

Waiting for a Dell representative to reply.

Installing the same driver will just yield the same results. You need to find a more stable version. According to your screenshot your driver is from 2012.

Please update to the latest release from AMD site. Use the auto update tool to get the latest driver

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply again, so this is what I did. I uninstalled the older version driver as you suggested and used the tool on AMD to site to detect drivers. But it dint gave anything. So there is a option to search for the drivers on AMD site so I downloaded and installed the drivers which is the latest beta drivers for the Laptop.

But still the situation is same, but one thing I certainly noticed that each time this thing happens the laptop is not able to wake from sleep mode. And once this happens it goes on repeating.

As for the tool above I tried running it, its not running but Task Manager is showing the process is running :(

Uninstall the device inc it's drivers via Device Manager and reboot. Windows will re-install the hardware. Once finished install this driver

Never used the AMD tool but ensure it's not loading up at Windows startup if it is then disable it. Or better still remove it from add/remove programs if it's in there.
