Dell XPS 13 9350 boot time slow

Hey guys, I got a new Dell XPS 13 9350, did a clean install of windows 10 pro. windows update installed all drivers for me. Computer is working well, but the boot time is on the slow side. It takes about 23 seconds to get to windows login screen from clicking the power button.

After clicking the power button the screen remains black for about 8-9 seconds, then the DELL logo shows up. After which is starts loading windows. I've seen some videos like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XjdXy0yORU There it boots up insanely fast. It will show the Dell logo after only a second or 2.

I've updated my BIOS to the latest version. Fast Boot in bios is set to "minimum", so it loads the least amount of checks. What could be causing the long wait before showing the Dell logo?

Uncheck the Enable USB Boot Support (in the BIOS under System Configuration -> USB / Thunderbolt Configuration).

That was a good guess but unfortunately didn't have an effect.

Also I don't have anything attached to USB so it shouldn't slow down the computer, I guess.

I'll play around with other BIOS boot order settings and report back.

For me it has accelerated by 3 seconds. The Dell logo comes after about 6 seconds and will remain only briefly (ie, the rotating point no longer come). I also have no devices to the USB ports.

Okay, I don't have problems with rotating logo. That seems to be even more troublesome. Have you updated BIOS to 1.1.9?

Have you run diagnostics? (Press and hold Fn during boot).

What's interesting is that my old 3-year-old XPS 12 does not have any delays whatsoever. Seems like the new hardware is deteriorating faster than old one :)

Yes I have updated to 1.1.9. but if I press Fn during boot nothing happend ( i.e. the computer starts up normally).

@espe, THANK YOU. This fixed my issue! 6 seconds to lock screen now from power button press.

Another thing, having connected external HDD drive via USB makes the boot super-extra-slow (30 secs?) with black screen, logo, then spinning circle and then some more logo. Even with @espe's trick ;(

Boot settings curiously metion only Windows Boot Manager.

Slow to Dell logo is due to the RAID setting in BIOS. It can be fixed by using ACHI instead. I don't know why this occurs in RAID mode. Did you change out your SSD? I created this problem when I moved my Dell's 9550 PM951 1TB SSD to my Dell 9350 system.

You can try switching to ACHI using this prodcedure:

1. Use msconfig program to set "safe boot" startup.

2. Restart. The system should restart into safe mode.

3. Restart again but hit F2 key to enter BIOS. Settings->System Configuration->SATA Operation->select the AHCI option, apply, exit.

4. Restart. The system should restart into safe mode. If the system has any drive issues then this procedure isn't working and you'll have to change the BIOS back to RAID.

5. Open a command prompt and invoke msconfig program. Change startup back to "normal".

6. Restart again. The system should boot normally. The slowness should have disappeared. In my case, it also fixed an issue with sleep always causing a restart.

I tried this but it doesnt work for my xps 9550. My xps is fhd, i7. 16gb ram, 512gb ssd.

The problem is the time from the power button to the appearance of dell logo.

It takes 6s~7s for me.

My bios version is the latest one 01.01.19

Plz help me

6 Sec is a little slow to see the logo. However, this time is controlled by the BIOS. Make sure the SSD is selected as the first device in the boot list.  My Win 10 tablet does it in about 2 sec; total time till the Desktop is about 11 sec.

@BSalita, @KirkD Slow boot appears even when the SSD is physically disconnected. Changing boot order or ACHI/RAID does not improve things. I had these changes done by Dell technician earlier and I've verified them just now.

I had 4 dell laptops before and none of them had this issue. I've got two XPS 3 (9350)s now at home and both of them have this slow boot issue. Everything is upgraded to latest drivers etc. etc.

For me it looks like an obvious flaw in 9350 manufacturing that has not been investigated thoroughly. Maybe customers just don't care if their computer boots with 10 sec delay and don't report it?

I had a 3 year old XPS 12 and there was virtually no boot delay.

Looks like I'm going to win this one! My fully spec'd 3 week old 9550 has gone from 10 seconds to 25 MINUTES!!!

Looks like I'll be spending the rest of the day wiping it ready for return.

Had nothing but problems with it too so not really sure if I want it fixing or a refund.

I just got my new 9550 I bought as a surprise for my wife out of the box last night.

The touch pad would not work at all.

Turns out the drivers were never installed.  That cost me about 2 hours of time trying to fix it and call phone support.   Wow.  Makes you wonder if this is Dell's premier laptop line.

I have a 9350 that is awaiting installation of a new motherboard right now.  It is 90 days old and I get a nice used replacement motherboard.  Its enough to make you consider other manufacturers in the future.

My issue is related to the Ethernet connection.  When I first got the machine I used an Ethernet adapter to plug into the USB-C connection.   The connection would connect, drop, connect, drop, and on and on.  I thought the adapter was bad and sent it back - waiting for the WD15 Dell Dock which has an Ethernet connection built in.

Unfortunately, when I connected the Dell Dock to my 9350 and plugged in the Ethernet cable . . . same exact problem.  I've verified all drivers for the machine and dock.  Dell tech support couldn't find the problem so I have a used MB on the way and an appointment Monday for warranty replacement.

Disappointing to have to get a used MB into a 90 day old machine.  If I'd only realized at the time that it was the laptop and not the adapter that was faulty I could have sent the machine back.  When I had a Lenovo X220 that needed a new MB - because it too was 3-4 months old at the time - their corporate office gave me a new MB.   Good luck getting anyone on the phone at Dell who could make that happen.  Sorry to complain a bit but after getting the brand new 9550 out of the box without crucial software installed I am a bit jaded at the moment.

Wow, 25 minutes seems... bad :)

My two 9350s are also fully spec'd, maybe that's related?

I don't want to jinx your repair but I had the motherboard replaced and it didn't really help.

And problems... yeah... video driver constantly crashing, bluetooth connection unstable, the dell diagnostics report SSD errors (Dell customer service told me that's a "known issue")... to name a few. Yes I did some troubleshooting and tried fixing it myself but honestly I've got this laptop for work not to play around with settings.
