Install Windows XP on Dell XPS M1330

The Dell XPS M1330 is a great laptop but quite many of users like me can only use the Windows XP  since certain professional software can only run on XP and have no support on Vista.

I got my M1330 received on Aug 1 and had to install the XP on it anyway. I got it almost done but still have one driver issue. I would like to share my previous jobs done to save the time for other users having the same need. Also, I would like the community can help to resolve the remaining driver issue so that everybody can enjoy the M1330 with XP!  : )

Part I: Windows XP professional installation CD
Any Dell XP SP2 Pro installation CD for previous Dell models (what I used)
Advantage of using the Dell OEM XP CD is that it never ask for a CD-key and works prefectly
Surely it is up to you to buy a new Windows XP installation CD from Microsoft and enter the CD-key.

Part II: Download XP drivers for M1330
From Dell's "Support & Download" website, choose "XPS 1330" and "Windows XP" for driver download:
1. R153997.EXE: Intel Mobile Chipset driver
2. R141246.EXE: Ricoh Memory Card(1394,SD,MMC,MS,xD) driver
3. R160323.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam driver
4. R160320.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam applications
5. R155586.EXE: Dell Touchpad, Pointing Stick driver
6. R155246.EXE: Broadcom-59XX Ethernet driver
7. R127314.EXE: Network-Wireless 335 Bluetooth Module driver

Note that certain important XP drivers for M1330 are missing in Dell's support site.
We need to download them from different sources instead:
1. Display driver:
NVIDIA-GeForce 8400M GS
nv_gfgo_101.34-2kxp32.exe

2. Audio driver:
SigmaTel HD Audio Codec-Driver: Exactly chipset is "SigmaTel STAC 9288 HD Audio Codec"
Note that I cannot find the matched XP driver for this though there are many Sigmatel 92XX drivers.
(Seems the STAC 9288 is a very new HD audio codec chip that only Vista driver is availiable)
[Raymond Aug 11, 2007]
Thanks for DELL-Jimmy P's great help :smileyvery-happy:
The R158235.EXE is the correct Dell official XP audio driver for M1330...

3. Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini card driver (if you are using the 802.11N wireless card)
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.zip and V11.1.1.0_XP32-Application.EXE

4. Fingerprint scanner driver:
UPEK-TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor
2.6_package.zip

5. Serial ATA (SATA) driver
Intel SATA driver (important for XP2 to support SATA HDD)
7kim06ww.exe

6. Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio CODEC support
Get the "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio CODEC"
XP patchs: B835221 WXP or B888111 WXPSP2, see Miscrosoft article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221 (if your XP is not SP2)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 (if your XP is already SP2)
The kb888111xpsp2.exe can actually downloaded from:

thunderhead1,

You mentioned in one of the previous posts that these are the summary problems:
1. No correct XP driver for SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC STAC 9288 of M1330
2. No XP version of Dell Quckset can be successfully installed on M1330
3. No XP version of Dell Security-Broadcom-Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 can be installed

Also, in the next post, you said -
Now I have all XP drivers installed onto M1330 ok except the "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODE" which has a yellow exclamation icon.

Does that mean you have solved no. 2 and 3? (I want to know, because even I have a fingerprint reader and I really want dell quickset!)

[Raymond] Not yet solve #2 and #3.
Since only #1 is a driver issue but #2 and #3 are application issues.

As metioned before, without #2 QuckSet installed:
Most of the function keys are still working fine except the "Wi-Fi Catcher" and "MediaDirect" buttons.
However, it dosn't affect the WiFi functions, currently I installed the Intel Wireless 4965GN attached utility application V11.1.1.0_XP32-Application.EXE and it have very similar function as the Wi-Fi Catcher.

As for without #3 TPM 1.2 installed:
There is no way to use figureprint to logon Windows XP but anyway it doesn't affect normal usage.
Note that the release date of XP verison TPM 1.2 is far before M1330 is released, the TPM installation problem always did some model checking (since not all Dell's models have equipped with the fingerprint scanner). May be Dell will soon release a XP TPM installer include the M1330 if many people request Dell. Or some smart guy can "crack" installer to skip the model check and allow smoot installion of the TPM.

August 11th, 2007 01:00

Hi guys, now XP running M1330 is basically OK!!! (Thanks DELL-Jimmy P's help).

The remaining issues are major utility/application installation and some untested peripherals:

DELL utilities:
1. DELL QuickSet utility for XP
2. DELL Security-Broadcom-Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 for XP
I try both some XP and the Vsita version and the installer just refuse to install the applicaitons onto M1330.

Untested Peripherals:
HDMI: I don't know whether extra driver is required as I don't have a HDMI cable and HDMI LCD TV set and now there is no yellow exclaimation icon inside XP's Device Manager
Other peripherals like ExpresCards slot and 1394 Firewire port should be fine as correct drivers are installed.

Welcome the community to work together to resolve the application issues or ask DELL to release new XP version of the utilities for M1330.

Thanks for DELL-Jimmy P's great help :smileyvery-happy:
The R158235.EXE is the correct audio driver to M1330 on XP
I just tried it and now my M1330 running XP SP2 Pro sounds!

Any solutions to these problems on similar lines to the audio driver one?

1. DELL QuickSet utility for XP
2. DELL Security-Broadcom-Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 for XP

*Bows in appreciation*

Guys,

Good news! Dell has a just put the "Protector Suite Software" Versison 5.6.2 on its ftp and it is officially for M1330:

I tried and it works perfectly :smileyvery-happy:
Now I can use fingerprint to logon Windows XP on my M1330, please try!!!

August 12th, 2007 20:00

That's fantastic! All they need to release now is the QuickSet utility for Windows XP.

We must call Dell and push them to do this to enjoy all the features of the laptop.

Raymond, I have a question:

The M1330 must've come with a recovery partition so that the laptop can be restored to its factory settings at any time.

Since I am installing Windows XP over Windows Vista, I want to backup this recovery partition so that I too can return to Vista whenever my university has full support for it.

My question to you is:

1.) If I install XP over the same partition in which Vista is present, will I lose the recovery partition, or will it be undisturbed?
2.) If I am going to lose it, can you tell me in detail how to back it up AND use it later when I want to restore Vista on the M1330?

Thanks for all your inputs.

thunderhad1,

The follow post "Information about installing Window XP over Vista...." should help:

If you want to preserved your Vista and then install the XP, the following should help:
"Install Windows XP in a Dual Boot with Pre-installed Windows Vista"
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about88231.html

I didn't try it by myself as I don't a dual boot Vista + XP.

Your university IT guy should able to follow the steps and finish that without problelm.
Note that the Vista and XP have to be installed in different partitions.
The later installed XP partiton can be backuped by "GHOST" or other tool for futher recovery.
I don't know if after you created one more partition for XP, will the Dell recovery CD sill work without affecting the XP partiton.

August 13th, 2007 13:00

Thanks Raymond. If I want to restore Vista at a later time, I don't care what happens to the XP partition (i.e. I will install Windows Vista over XP if I want to install Vista again...no dual booting).

So do I still have to backup my recovery and MediaDirect partitions, or will they remain undisturbed during my Windows XP installation?

Also, since you've installed Windows XP, are you able to use MediaDirect? What is the partition break-up of your hard drive right now?

August 13th, 2007 13:00

A couple of questions just popped into my mind as I review what I need before carrying the installation of Windows XP forward:

a.) 3. Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini card driver (if you are using the 802.11N wireless card)
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/wireless_n/overview.htm
V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.zip and V11.1.1.0_XP32-Application.EXE

Do I need this driver? I did not make any changes to the wireless configuration while ordering the laptop.

b.) The drivers download page for M1330 - Windows XP has 16 items (including software). Do I need to download all of them?

Thanks again.

August 15th, 2007 20:00

I don't have MediaDirect installed successfully with XP on M1330 yet.
May be someotherelse can help.

By the way, Dell has just officially released the  Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN driver on Aug 14 for M1330.
Intel - Driver
Applies to:
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Raymond: Just tidy up all previous instructions in a single post :smileyvery-happy:

Install Windows XP on DELL XPS M1330

Part III: Create partitions used by MediaDirect
Note that the original pre-installed MediaDirect on M1330 requires a special arrangement of the partitions of the 160GB HDD:
DELL XPS M1330 original Vista 160GB HDD partitions information:
Total: 152626MB
-:  Partition 1    [FAT]   71 MB  Primary partition
 E: Partition 2  [NTFS]  2.0GB  Primary partition
C: Partition 3      [NTFS]   60 GB   Primary partition
D: Partition 4  [NTFS]   84 GB Extended partition
 G: Partition 5  [FAT32] 2.5GB Extended partition

Partitions 1, 2, 3 are primary partitions and without them you are not allowed to re-install the MediaDirect (windows version). Furthermore, without proper partition arrangement, even after you successfully install the XP, once you press the “MediaDirect” button to boot, it will corrupt the boot setting of your newly installed XP and then you cannot boot back to XP anymore!

It is highly recommended to backup the original pre-installed Vista HDD partitions first for later Vista restore.

Take out the original HDD and connect it to another PC with SATA, or plug in the original HDD into an external USB HHD case with SATA interface. Run GHOST to clone the entire Vista disk into a *.GHO image for later restoring of the Vista HDD.

There are 3 options to go:
1. Install XP to override Vista on Partition 3 w/o alter other partitions ( Recommended)
2. Delete Partitions 2, 3, 4 and re-partitioning them to adjust the partition sizes according to your need and install XP on partion 3 ( Advanced users only)
3. Use Dell MediaDirect Re-installing CD to erase entire HDD and create the first and last partitions required by MediaDirect, and then you can create new partitions in the middle  free spaces ( Experts only)

Option 1: Override Vista by XP in the same OS partition (Keep MediaDirect partitions)
When installing XP (refer to next section) using the WinXP installation CD, please choose to delete partition 3 and re-create it before installing the new XP OS

Option 2: Re-partitioning 2,3,4 and install XP (Keep MediaDirect partitions)
1. Take out the original HDD and connect it to another PC with SATA, or plug in the original HDD into an external USB HHD case with SATA interface.
2. Run the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management(Local) to re-partition the RECOVERY, OS, DATAPART1 according to your need.
3. You may choose to delete only the partitions 2, 3 and 4 (optional) to adjust their sizes accordingly to your need.
4. In order to let the later WinXP installer CD to install XP into partition 3 with driver letter “C”, it is better to delete partitions 2 and  4 as free spaces and leave the partition 3 only so that later WinXP will recognize it as drive “C” for XP installation.

Option 3: Starting from MeidaDirect Re-Installation CD (Re-create all partitions)
Get the MediaDirect re-installation CD labeled as:
"For Re-installing Dell MediaDirect 3.3 on Dell XPS M1330 Computers"
1. Insert MediaDirect CD and re-boot from CD
2. From the menu items: "1", "2", "3"
Press menu "1" if you want only need one "C:" drive for later OS intallation
Press menu "2" if you want "C:", "D:" drives for later OS installation
*** Specify the size of drive "C:" in GB, remaining size will be assigned to "D:" ***
Here I choose "2" to have multiple drives to suit my purpose
3. The installation CD will ERASE all data in you HDD and creates two partitions for its uses and copy necessary files. After installation completes, Eject the MediaDirect installation CD
4. Press any key to reboot and next to insert the XP installation CD to install the WinXP OS

Part IV: Install Windows XP on M1330

Step 1: Modify M14330 BIOS setting
Since XP SP2 installation CD doesn't support SATA HDD at that moment, we need to disable M1330's SATA and set back to ATA mode for entire XP installation:
   1. Boot and press "F2" to enter BIOS setup menu
   2. Onboard Devices -> Flash Cache Module: Change to "Enabled" to "Off"
   3. Onboard Devices -> SATA Opteration: Change from "AHCI" to "ATA"
   4. System -> Boot Sequence: Move "CD/DVD/CD-RW" item up to the top
   5. Press "ESC" and choose "Save/Exit" to save and exit BIOS

Note: whenever staying in the BIOS menu, you can eject out / insert the installation CD
Partitioning the HDD accordingly to what you need, I partition my new HDD same as the Vista as I want to install the Dell MeidiaDirect in the XP too. My order for M1330 is 60GB for OS and remaining 100GB for data partition.

Step 2: Install WinXP
Insert the XP installation CD and boot from CD and install the XP as usual. If using the Dell XP SP2 Pro CD, it is no need to enter any CD-key.

Settings after Windows XP Installation and reboot the new OS (case dependent):
1. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management
2. Change CD-ROM 0 letter to "F"
3. Re-create the partition 4 and set it drive letter to “D” (optional)
4. Format partition 4 to NTFS, change letter to "D" and rename to "USER" (optional)
5. Re-create the partition 2 and set it drive letter to “E”
6. Format partition 2 to NTFS, change letter to "E" and rename to "RECOVERY"

Step 3: Install M1330 specific drivers on XP
Copy all the downloaded driver source into the M1330 via a USB drive.
Install the driver one by one and reboot the system once and once as required...

Suggested driver installation order:

1. Intel Mobile Chipset driver
2. Ricoh Memory Card (1394, SD, MMC, MS, xD) driver

3. Special handle of SATA driver installation
To install Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller driver, execute kim06ww.exe to unpack the driver.
Run install.com in \PREPARE, it installs a small program in  c:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE and then run c:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE\install.cmd. Reboot the laptop.
Press "F2" to enter BIOS menu again, re-enable the "FLASH CACHE MODEL" and change "ATA" to "AHCI", remember to SAVE and exit BIOS. Reboot the laptop again.
Entering XP, the system will discover a new PCI hardware; browse the driver to the "7kim06ww" folder to install the actual SATA driver.

4. Display driver: NVIDIA-GeForce 8400M GS
5. Special handle of Audio driver installation
Install the Microsoft UUA Bus driver patch to XP SP2 and Audio Driver
For XP to support UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio CODEC, install the XP patche:
After install this patch kb888111xpsp2.exe, you will see in Device Manage the following driver:  "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio CODEC".

Then install the R158235.EXE (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio driver) and rebooting XP

6. R155586.EXE: Dell Touchpad, Pointing Stick driver
7. R155246.EXE: Broadcom-59XX Ethernet driver
8. R164255.EXE: Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN-driver
9. R127314.EXE: Network-Wireless 335 Bluetooth Module driver
10. R160323.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam driver
11. R160320.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam applications
12. Install the UPEK-TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor for the “Biometric Coprocessor”
