ST1747: 7x Bios beeps - Core i7 throttling - too less A/C adapter

more and more ST1747 users reports about reducted clock rates of their Intel Core i7, if similary their graphics adapter (ATI HD4650) is under heavy load! But the worse is yet to come, some Core i7 quits working, 7x Bios Beep, Game over, sudden death of the CPU! :emotion-45:

Update: the 7x Beep issue seems to be fixed since Bios A06!

UPDATE 03.2010: STILL OPEN ISSUES OF STUDIO 1747 / BIOS A07
if you have more suggestions for this list, don´t hasitate to inform/contact me!

►Core i7 Throttling
under simultaneous full load of CPU and GPU, Core i7 CPU throttles down to averaged 4x 1100 - 1400 MHz

►Performance between battery and AC power
most Studios runs with a bit more performance if only battery is connected

►Hot 90 watt a/c adapters
under fully load, the serially 90 watt adapter seems to work at/above its performance limit - temperatures over 70°C are not acceptable
call your local Dell support for a free 130 watt adapter.

►Problems resuming from sleep and/or hibernate
if the 1747 "sleeps" more than 30-60 minutes it´s possible that it don´t resume anymore but turn it off&on "hard" by holding power-button

►Problems with playing FullHD-Streams
freezing/jerking, max. loaded and almost non-responding Studios if playing a FullHD-stream, e.g. Youtube
possible solution, please look here. New Dell ATI driver in progress.

►Permanent running fan
fan starts causeless running at increased speed shortly after turning the 1747 on. Fan keeps blowing at increased speed, even if Windows boots all over and CPU idles - because of the still-blowing fan only at ~32° C. You can stop the fan only with a reboot or by stressing CPU - if temperature reaches 48°+C, fan slows down to lowest level. Turn off stress test, temperature drops below 48°C, fan turns off then. Confirmed by several users. 4 new users reported me this curious issue in the last few days!

►Too less temperature range for fan
fan needs an extended temperature range in office mode. At the moment fan turns on at ~53°C and off at ~48°C. That causes the fan to start&stop every 10-15 seconds, very bothering

►Cutted sound
If the IDT sound "idles" for a while and you play then any sound, the first ~0.5 seconds are cutted! This happens only one time, following sounds are played correctly! If you stop and wait a few minutes, the next sound after this idle time is cutted again

►Not enough power to USB ports and Firewire
There are pages upon pages of various users all experiencing the same issues.

My only options were to switch to the Studio XPS 16 OR Studio 17 with the 900p screen with a discount of $75.00.
Did anyone remember how much the 1080 screen upgrade cost when building the laptop?

Due to the many different promotions Dell had running, it probably does not really matter: Generally, the difference is worth probably more than this (check whether you find any other notebook with both options). However, I would not settle for anything less than 1080 on a  notebook monitor with 17+". The Studio 1747 1080 monitor is a real eye catcher. I cannot believe, that this monitor has reached End of Life -- only a few months after introducing the "New Studio 17". Rather:

  • The monitor has become to expensive in production (compared to the calculated prices)
  • The monitor draws too much electric power (and does technically not fit into the Studio 1747 design)
  • The monitor requires too much computational power from the graphics board  (and does technically not fit into the Studio 1747 design)

If it is out of production, I wonder how Dell will fulfill its warranty and guarantee commitments for those customers, who have it already? (However, in fact, also in the German store, the 1080 monitor is no longer an option. The only available 900 monitor is advertised with: "Higher resolutions provide more clarity and detail" -- higher than what? In addtion: "This option prolongs delivery by 10 days" -- well, it is the only option. Or should I buy the notebook without any monitor?)

My story is as follows:

Ordered December 1st, 2009. Studio 1747. I7 720 with the 1080p screen. Estimated delivery was the 24th of December 2009. On the 24th, I got an email saying my order was delayed. On the 29th I got" Unfortunately, your order is still delayed. We are working to establish a new shipping date as soon as possible. You will be notified when your order has shipped from our U. S. manufacturing facility. No action further is required from you at this time."

I did not receive any estimated shipping date after this point. On the 12th of January, I contacted Dell customer service who told me that my laptop would be shipped on or before the 15th of January. On the 15th, nothing at all. Contacted Dell. they said that they would have an estimated shipping date within 48 hours. On the 19th, I had not received anything, so I sent an email to Dell regarding my experience. Only after this did I receive a call from Dell telling me that the reason my order was delayed, was because that the 1080p screen that was an option for the Studio 17 is no longer is stock and is "End of Life" meaning they would not be getting anymore in stock. My only options were to switch to the Studio XPS 16 OR Studio 17 with the 900p screen with a discount of $75.00.

Nothing mentioned about any technical difficulties related to the laptop. I do believe others I read of ordered a Studio 17 with 1080 screen AFTER the 1st and received their laptops!

Overall the customer service in keeping me updated on the situation has been terrible.

This is what I'm wondering as well.  The 1080p monitor is no longer available on the Canadian website anymore either, which I find strange.  When the Studio 17 with the i7 was released in Canada, the only option was the 900p monitor.  Some time in November, Dell added the 1080p as an option, which is exactly what I wanted since the US site advertised that upgrade since day one.  Come mid-December, the option was removed.

It makes you wonder if the combo of the i7 and 1080p was introducing high power demands.  ATI's 4650 card is more than capable of handling 1920x1080, so I doubt that is the issue.  The problem now is that Dell is selling a laptop that doesn't meet its advertised specs and now ships with, in my opinion, a crippled display (come on Dell, 1600x900 on a 17" laptop?)

I think it is time that I call up Dell as it has been over a month since I returned the original laptop, with a beautiful 1080p screen.  Sigh.  If they tell me that the 1080p is no longer available I'll be returning the laptop top for a FULL refund and won't put up with any of this restocking fee nonsense.

Let us know what they say. It would interesting to see if what they told me coincides with what they tell you. I'm in Canada as well.

[Wow my last post was deleted - I guess the word that rhymes with "kiss" isn't appropriate?]

That will really annoy me if they've left my order in limbo because they don't have a 1080p monitor (they should have at least one since I returned one :)). I wish I could send them a bill for wasting my time and efforts on this purchase. It's extremely frustrating.

I would suggest a call to Dell Customer Service. In my situation, I had emailed Dell through their site about how upset I was about the delays and lack of communication. The reply email referred me to my sales rep who originally dealt with my laptop who then told me that it was because the monitor was no longer in stock/EoL(End of Life)

The Studio 17 had/would need a 17.3 inch screen to match the laptop size. I do believe the screens on the alienware are slightly smaller as well as being 1920x1200.(Exactly 17") If that could be an option for those that got screwed by Dell when that screen option was available.

It is nice to finally know why my order of Dec 8 is in limbo. I was told by a dell rep it is delayed until the 22nd of January and then recieved a second email that admitted they will not make that date either.  Now, after waiting 6 weeks, the estimated shipping date reads" Information Temporarily Unavailable"  How helpful!!  Time to demand they cancel my order......  I'm looking at the sony 16.4" as the specs have just been updated and include a 1080p screen.  Other brands are coming out with i5 and i7 with 1080p so I think I'll wait a bit longer.

Regarding the availablity of the 1080p monitor, check the Alienware M17.  They have two 1080p versions of 17" monitors - wouldn't these be the same???

Well in my opinion Dell is beating us around the bush. It's fairly easy to find out for which powerusage the mainboard was designed. If it wasn't designed for higer power than 90 watt you shouldn't even test if it can cope with more. If it is designed for more power just state so and allow higher powers. Of course there is also the need to figure out the heat dissapation. But that's easy too to figure out. if the system heats up too much with more power you'll we know in a couple of hours.

Just be transparant with what prblems dell is facing so customers can make their mind up. But do not lead us on with the idea that Dell is able to create some sub-optimum (no more power than 90 and reasonable performance for average internet and wordprocessing usage) .

I ordered my 1747 on 28th dec with an expected delivery date of 2nd feb 2010.

I pestered the sales dept for weeks asking if they could confirm they were confident of fixing the issues with the 1747 prior to my delivery date. I thought I would be saving them time and resources as if it didnt work , I would return it.

After my last email to them they cancelled my order!!!!

Obviously not to confident they can resolve the issues

No, it does not mean that at all.   Dell is investigating a lot of different things.   There are a lot of "moving parts" so to speak and if there are changes to how one component (and that can be hardware or software) works, how will it affect the rest of the system?   It's a complicated issue that takes time to look into.

I have tried to contact you, but i don't know if the message was sent so i will ask you here.

I purchased my Dell Studio 1747 on the 14th Decemeber 2009 and recived it on 19th January 2010. (Spain)

How can i know i have a fixed laptop for the 7-beed problems, altought i have already downloaded the bios update (04) im not confident.

"Some insiders saying, the A/C adapter deliveres too less power - 90 watts only,  if all components running at "full throttle", then more power is needed! "

I have experienced some thtottle and fan speeding when it was not needed.

I like this laptop and what it's SUPOSED to offer, i would like to know if with my year warranty i would get a free fixing if Dell found a solution for the Throttle and other problems.

Hope and have my fingers crossed, that i will not have to send back this laptop and get my money back.

Greetings.

well i canceled mine as well.

Also i am going for a sony vaio F laptop. It has all the options the dell has plus blueray, bluetooth, wifi n already included as well as a full hd 1080p screen.

Really the dell sales department treated me as garbage, i lost confidence in dell big time.

Since my order status remains "Information Temporarily Unavailable" and from what I am hearing on this forum, it could be months before the Blue Ray and 1080 screen are available (and what's with the Midnight Blue color being gone too?) .  So, I just cancelled my order. No apology or explanation from the sales agent - I think Dell is relieved to get out of their commitment to customers so easily.  The trouble is they are losing good customers.  Goodbye Dell -  I'm shopping elsewhere from now on.

Thanks for all the good information on this forum.

I had a near miss when I nearly ordered a ST1747 system the other day.   Luckily I spotted this forum just in time.

I may order an i5 based system from Dell.     Does anyone know of a similar issue with the  i5-520M based system?

I checked the A/C power adapter rating for several other companies who sell identical CPU  graphic card systems, including HP and Sony and all supply a 120 Watt adapter as a minimum.  I note that Dell actually supplies a 140 Watt adapter with their top line Alienware system running the i7 processsor, albeit a more powerful one.

Everyone gets the same laptops no matter where you live. I guess not everyone tests there laptops.

90 WATT is not enough for your laptop, that is an issue and you can not solve it.
Other brand use a 120 watt why you think that is.

Cancel it, buy a sony or hp what ever.
