Studio 1558 fan problem

Hello everybody,

Just got my brand new studio 15 on friday, turned it on after about 15 mins of light surfing the system overheated, restarted and everything worked fine. Dell said this is a known issue with no fix. This happens about once a day. Contacted dell tech support they updated the bios and said that would fix the problem. Long story short it didn't. Tech support is suppost to call me back today for a system exchange, my question is what kind of system will i get, I paid almost $1300 for my current system, which i've had less then a week, and i don't want to agree to a system exchange if they're gonna send me a $500 inspirion system. So will they send me something comparable to what i purchased or do i just need to opt for a refund and try a different system?

Dell Support installed BIOS A04 for me.  Now, so far it does not over-heat and shut down.  However, there is still a problem:  even when the computer is just sitting there idle (all programs closed), and the CPU usage is only 1-2%, every minute or so the fan rotates at high speed for about 10 seconds, and then returns back to the low speed.  This is quite annoying!!  It does this when the temperature (as reported by Real Temp) is about 40-45 degrees Celsius.

It seems like the temperature-fan control is too sensitive.  They should only turn the fan on at the high speed when the CPU usage is higher and the temperature is higher.  Or, the CPU idle temperature is too high due to poor heat dissipation.  This problem existed before the BIOS A04 update too, and it seems like it still hasn't been fixed.  Anyone have the same problem?  Is there going to be another BIOS update soon?

I'm also having the same problem with the fan turning on and off. I think you may be right about the sensitivity, my fan turns on around 43 degrees. The core iX is supposed to run cooler than most cpus too. I hope Dell releases another bios update to correct this because I think it's affecting battery life too. Plus it scares me when the hot air blows on my leg. lol

I have the same problem. If a new BIOS update does not come out before my 30-days are up, I'm going to have to send this back and wait for the HP Envy 14 or get a HP ProBook 4520s.

I was planning on returning mine too, but I was hoping that sending the laptop in for service would repair this issue. It didn't. They said they couldn't replicate the problem so they sent it back and did nothing to it. How hard is it to replicate a problem that happens with regular use. I sent the laptop back during my 21 day return period and now it's over and now I'm stuck with a laptop with a crazy fan that just needs a little adjustment to its BIOS.

I got my new studio a few days ago, too. The fan does a little spinning noise every few seconds. It's very low, almost sounds like hissing or static (it's not static, I'm just trying to find a way to describe the sound as it spins and stops). This isn't the fan going fully on, it does that every few minutes at a regular noise level that seems normal. This is not the loud, hairdryer problem some people reported. Is this problem with the little static/hissing sound as it starts & stops when the fan isn't fully running something everyone has? Is there a way to fix it? Seems a shame to have that annoying noise on a brand new, expensive computer that otherwise is very nice. If they can fix it, do they send out a refurb part? I also don't want a refurb part when I paid for a new machine, would hate to have to return it over this.

New BIOS (A05) was just released today. Not surprisingly, it did not fix the fan problem.

I just got my Studio 1558 yesterday (core i7, ati5470, 7200 hdd). I installed the new bios (A05) and made a clean install (win7 pro 64bit). After installing all drivers and software (from the dell website), the fan issue was still there. Even when I'm doing nothing, it turns on every 2 minutes.    I hope Dell will look into this, otherwise I will return laptop.

I now think what I thought was the fan is actually the hard drive spinning away in my machine. Others have told me theirs is silent and certainly my old laptop and husband's laptops are silent. It's a low noise, but annoying. Not sure if Dell can fix it or not so I haven't called yet, but I guess I should as it's annoying and might be a sign of trouble to come, too. Anyone else have this problem? And was it fixable?

Yep still got the problem. The download said it added CPU support. It looks like they're not even trying to fix this!

I don't know if I'm going to return it now. Dell credited me $100 on Monday because I wanted to return it. The only other laptop I want is HP ProBook 4520s, which is hard to find and HP Envy 14 which probably won't be out in Canada for another 2 months. I really do like the Studio 15 but...

CAN YOU PLEASE FIX THIS ANNOYING FAN PROBLEM!

Bios A06 was released...still didn't fix anything! They fixed all these other things:

"Feature enhance:
1. Fix P6000 C-state: The P0 core CPU frequency can only be set to high in Windows Vista 32-bit.
2. Fix S4 long run failed with error code 9F on DC only.
3. Disable external USB port during flash BIOS.
4. Correct the wrong processor core count information in the SMBIOS table.
5. Support 2nd source SPI ROM
6. Update ME bin file in BIOS for 2nd source SPI ROM.

Issue Fixed.
1. Fix system auto power off.
2. Fix system will show BSOD 9F after running S4 stress under DC mode 10~25%.
3. Solve production line SWDL speed problem"

one more thing i was just wondering if any of you have run the windows experiance index to rate the performance of yr machines if you can that is my pc kept freezing running the test or giving me a  error but wen it did work i was shocked lol

I got the same thing you did and don't have a problem with it. The fan doe's kick on every once in a while but that's only when it gets warm like it should and it is not as loud as pepole say. My daughter got the same thing in the i3 and she had problems with it and they fixed it. And it works fine now to you will be happy with it

Wish I'd seen this forum before!!! I am expecting my Studio 15 to be delivered today - ordered it with i5 2.4ghz, 4GB RAM, 1GB ATI and the upper end screen.

I am somewhat worried as it seems like there are more problems than satisfied customers but then again for boards like these people generally don't come to them to report satisfaction but rather a problem although the continuous nature of the issue for many might suggest a larger issue that fewer people might be reporting on actively to community forums as generally it's a smaller tech savvy crowd that will participate in these types of discussions.

All I can say is I hope that my system won't have these issues, I will be on the lookout for them, and I will report back any follow-up.  It should be noted though that I contacted a customer service rep with my concerns and he is proactively reaching out to me to make sure everything is ok which on one hand reassures me I will be supported but I also have a sneaking suspicion he is almost anticipating problems - I don't know if it's because of the system or to try to make me feel better about my purchase.

On paper though this looks like an awesome system for a great price and I look forward to using it primarily as a desktop replacement (the motherboard on my xps 410 fried just after 3 years of use so I opted to buy a new comp as repair would have cost several hundred anyway) I hope it meets expectations!!

I wish I read this forum before too. The fan's not super loud or anything and if you have music on all the time like me you won't even notice. I have most of the same specs as you except the ATI card. 1080p takes some time to get used to. It's a great laptop and I think you'll still enjoy it.  I just don't like how Dell won't acknowledge this problem even when I sent it in once and asked tech support to let their BIOS engineers know.
