studio 1749 fan noise/temperature problems

Hey guys,

I've recently received my dell studio 1749 laptop with the following specs,

- i5 CPU 520m

- 4 gigs of RAM

- Intel HD graphics

- 320 gig HD

The problem with this laptop is that the fan will start to whine every few minutes seemly without reason.

I've done some investigation and found out the following:

- there seems be a threshold of 35 to 36 degrees celsius. Once the CPU hits that temperature, the fan will start to cool it down to under 30 degrees

- the idle temperature of the CPU is always creeping up, even without load.  If I leave the computer alone at idle with almost no CPU activity, the temperature will creep up to the threshold...thus triggering fan.

the cycle repeats itself every few minutes.

I've attached a picture to illustrate the problem.

I've attached a picture to illustrate the problem.

Since this is my first laptop, I want to ask does the CPU temperature stay constant during idle? or does it creep up like mine?

Can the threshold be modified?

Is this normal with the dell studio?

With the fan whining every few minutes, it can get very annoying.

If anyone has this problem/has a fix, please let me know.

Thanks

The "Dell" technician replaced the motherboard, fan & heatsink.

The problem was not resolved. Indeed, there is now an added problem. I have no sound.

The technician asked me how old my PC was - it's less than a month old.

Clearly it's a software or heat sink problem.  Either the fan control software needs to be re-designed, or the laptop needs a better heat sink to dissipate heat (I'm an electrical engineer).  Dell has lost me as a future customer.

For those of you looking for a cheap solution.  Get a  large, flat soft gel pack used for keeping food cold, or for first aid.  Keep it in the freezer overnight.  Put it under your laptop (inside a waterproof plastic bag).  This will keep your laptop cool enough so the fan does not start up for many hours.  Maybe get 2!

The HeatShift laptop cooler pads do nothing to solve this problem, other than muffle the sound a bit.  Even after freezing it.

I have tinnitus (ringing of the ears) caused by computer fan noise, so this fan problem is a health issue for me.

Cheers.

And to make matters worse, I now have no sound. The Dell technician who replaced the MB lives in the same town as me (fortunate,eh?).

He diagnosed that the new MB was duff and to contact Dell again and ask for another MB.

This OUTRAGEOUS !!! I just found this article on CNBC http://www.cnbc.com/id/37988443 about DELL hiding massive system failures they were AWARE OF !!!!!! They sold computers they knew were likely to fail, for 3 years !!!!!

I guess DELL will never solve our problem... In this article you will learn how DELL employees are told how to avoid talking about problems. It reminds me of the several posts that were deleted from this forum so as to prevent people from learning more about the experience of others.

This is SCANDALOUS. I feel our situation with this fan problem is very similar to what is explained in this article: there is a default in the design of the computer, but since DELL devoted itself to put low prices first, they prefer to ignore it and not "waste" time on a fix.

I don't think I'll ever buy anything from DELL again, because I have been very disappointed in how they treat their customers. I feel like a fool... I don't know what to do now.

Please share your opinion!

Is there anyway we can return the computer as ' not fit for purpose '? If we are all having the same problem and it cannot be fixed how many times are we supposed to send in to get it fixed by dell before we can get a refund ?

I would ask that everyone who has a fan noise problem report it to Dell if they haven't already done so.

The more people that complain, the more seriously Dell should take the issue and he quicker they should find a resolution (at least that's the theory!).
(I don't think that complaining on here will have much effect).

Be as specific and detailed as you can.

Dell asked me to supply the following information:
 - When do you hear the fan making the noise? (e.g. when laptop is idle or using a application)
 - Does the resource monitor show any variation in the CPU, disk activity, etc. when the fan starts spinning and making noise?
 - Attach a screen shot of resource monitor if there does seem to be a link
 - Do you observe any system lockups or graphic lags when the fan noise is observed?
 - Do you feel any symptom of system heating up?
 - if possible record the noise and attach it.

So i'm guessing this is the reason they are on sale for now? I was planning to buy a studio 17 since there is a promotion of €250 that still lasts for 4 days. Untill i saw this thread.

Any chance that they resolve this issue? I don't mind having the problem for a few weeks as long as they solve it. But it doesn't look like that is going to happen... Or is it?

My contact in Dell tech support assures me that their research team are working on a BIOS update and will keep me posted on the update as soon as its released.

Is it a certain thing that it will get resolved? Cause i am tempted to buy it but i would hate having to live with the fan going crazy all the time. Not knowing drives me crazy since i only have 4 days left to decide

Update : I was contacted by email by Dell. they are arranging to send me a new, replacement Studio 17. That's the upside, teh downside is that I will be without a computer for 15 days though. Why can't they tell me when the replacement is ready, then collect my 'old' (less than 2 months) one and give me the replacement ?

It makes you think though that there is a problem if Dell are willing to offer a new replacement or maybe they are simply trying to look after a customer ?

Did they mention anything about the fan problem being solved on the replacement?

No, I received an email on 7th July from Dell which said:

"This case has been brought up to my notice and having gone through the entire communication, I understand you are still facing technical issues with the system. In order to help resolve the issue to your satisfaction, I am offering you a system replacement"

There was no comment on whether the issue would be fixed and no mention of future Bios updates etc.

Do I think it wil be fixed - let's say I'm not holding my breath. It's going to be 2 to 3 weeks before I get the replacement. Obviously I will keep the forum posted with whether the problem was fixed. I'm on my 2nd Motherboard, fan, heat sink and this didn't cure the issue so it is not a case of me getting a duff computer the first time round. Indeed, with the 2nd motherboard it looks like the speaker circuitry was defective on receipt, an extra problem not seen before the components were replaced.

Not at the moment... I emailed Dell again to ask them for a collection date for the "old" laptop.
