Studio xps 1640--no audio through hdmi

I have a dell studio xps 1640. When I connect it to the tv via hdmi, I do not get any sound. I have worked on this several hours myself then handed it over to tech support both by phone and another by chat and neither did anything I hadn't already tried myself. So far, reinstalled drivers. Restarted computer after plugging hdmi in. And also made sure that the hdmi was default playback device. Everything appears to be normal on computer and tv. Cable is fine. I have gotten sound to play 2 times through test of dolby digital under supported formats on the hdmi menu. However that is the only sound ever played to the tv and it doesnt work now. When I try to play a song in windows media player with hdmi plugged in, I get an x by the song and a popup that says it cannot play and lists possible reasons like use by another program etc that aren't the case. Sound is fine without hdmi. So far, tech support doesn't know and wants to put it on my tv or cable which definitely isn't the case. At one point, they even suggested I needed external speakers attached to the tv to play the sound...and I do and they are working fine. They claimed that they would call me back and haven't yet so I kinda doubt it. This is a replacement comp for another computer with a motherboard issue and one of them stated that this may be the issue with this one as well and they have yet to carry over my original warranty so they were reluctant to help me with the problem in the first place. They haven't even considered another problem of the computer not recognizing disks or usb until its restarted. And claim that may have to be fixed with a factory settings restore which isn't cool. Any help is highly appreciated!! Thanks!!

P.S. Somebody mentioned something about a PCI bus in the last thread (but I did not get to read any posts after my last one)...but as far as I could tell the driver is not marked unknown. Driver version: 6.0.6001.18000

I'm here still. :emotion-5:

It's just that I have 4 hrs and 51 minutes before my vacation starts, so I have a ton of loose ends to tie off. I'm taking my laptop with me, so I'll check in when I can from Vegas. Pauline, please detail any lingering issues you have to me in a PM. I can't promise when I'll get to it, but I will get to it. Thanks for your patience.

*waves to Bill* I'll send you a pm about the bugs I'm having, but I'm not too concerned about them - the main problem has definitely been fixed. Make sure you enjoy your holiday.

I had exactly the same problem with my new studio xps 1640 (with bluray).  I installed the following driver and it now works like a dream (both DVDs and Blurays).

Don't forget to change the settings in POWERDVD DX to HDMI else the sound will still continue to come out of the laptop speakers.

T,

Thanks for posting and letting us know about the new ATI driver . I see that it  was released just 3 days ago.

Just bringing this back to life again - my boyfriend and I recently upgraded his Dell XPS16 to Windows 7 (64 bit) and we're back to square one with the sound problems again. Have there been any new drivers put out to rectify the problem that we haven't heard about? It's been a few months now, after all.

Cheers,
Pauline.

Pauline,

I am having the same problem with my XPS 1640.  Window 7 64 Bit, I have the ATI 4670 1 gig card.  No sound through HDMI port.  Been on the phone with tech support over 5 hours total.  No resolutions.  My computer has NOTHING except the default installed programs, and MS office that I installed.

I managed to get sound once through the HDMI port- dont know how or why it worked the one time.

I have updated the BIOS, Chipset, Audio Drivers, and the ATI drivers with the latest on the DELL site today- no resolution.  What I find odd though- When I right click on the pseaker icon and bring up the Volume Control Options, I can go to the ATI HDMI Output and right click and perform the Test Tones.  The test tones do work and play bak through the TV, howver that is the only sound I can get.

I have tried using Zune player, Media player, Power DVD, etc....Great video, no audio.

I have tried all the workarounds listed on the previous page, and so has the DELL tech's.  Anyone have any other ideas?????????

I would think, just think, that all components fo the a new laptop are checked prior to shipment to a customer.........................hmmmmmm :)

I have the studioi xps 1645 and had the same problem. If you are using cyberlink Power DVD be sure you have the latet version I think it is 8.3. Next hook up the hdmi cablto your tv and go to control panel , Under hardware and sound choose connect to a projector, choose projector only. You won't have a picture of sound on your laptop but you should have it on the tv. Actually my desktop will show on the tv screen.

I hope this works for you. It did for me.

could you email me the steps that you take to unistall that ATI catalyst software? Eversince I did a update I lost my sound and it is really bothering me, it will say its testing and show via the playback devices that there is audio but it doesnt make it to the cord

Mary G, That is ABSOLUTLY false! There is no reason for a person would not to get audio via there HDMI reguadles of what the sourse is cable, computer or otherwise! The HDMI port has not only the video driver linked to it but your audio driver as well, the issue is with the video driver. My HDMI was working fine until a "update" was installed and I have not been able to get sound through HDMI since

Hi,

I ran into some kind of a similar situation connecting my Samsung TV to the XPS.

As solution I first casted to the screen via my network. It assumes a network connection on your TV but also a hdmi dongle might do the job.

But the signal wasn't 5.1.....

So I looked into the drivers also and the only ones I have installed now are :

F17VG

R205174

R221820

R226903

R250352

R306353

As I remember, it was when I completed the IDT installation, that the sound started working.......

And it works very fine.... :-) on 5.1, via the HDMI port, but also via the DisplayPort!!!!

Hoping this information being of any use..... :-)

regards,

J.
