Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback

Hi,

Recently I've been having some problems playing back any sort of media.  At regular intervals the audio will freeze/skip for a second and make a loud grinding noise, then resume.  This happens with music, streaming videos, games, pretty much everything.  If I'm watching a video or playing a game, the screen will freeze for a second, then resume.

I'm using an Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64-bit, SP1.

I've tried everything I could think of, updating all my drivers, reinstalling codecs, running anit-virus, and cleaning out my system.  I've found that sometimes the lag corresponds to spikes in my DPC latency, but sometimes they don't, and I can't find out what's causing the spikes.  I've tried most of the solutions here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/19142484/19265470.aspx#19265470 ,but nothing seems to have helped, and I'm getting a bit desperate.

Any ideas?

I actually have changed the wireless adapter to a Dell 1395. The problem is worse with the 1395, however, the 1395 adapter turns on instantly when the wifi hotkeys are pressed. The computer came with a 1490, which has a 5GHz band (802.11a). Disabling that band was one of the things I did to help the problem.

I think Branimir is right, the audio problem is partly caused by the wireless adapter or its drivers. IT also stands to reason that the audio driver itself is to blame. I can see where an Intel storage driver or update could be blamed IF my computer had an Intel IDE controller, chipset, or drive  (which it does not). I cannot see anywhere at all that it would have anything to do with video drivers like people are saying about the 1501, although I did update my Catalyst stuff.

Download DPC latency checker,,,run it,,,,,in new tab open device manager,,,,look at color of the bars,,,,if you have a problem(and you do)  your bar after 15 sec will turn red,,and the color of the bars when everything is ok shud be green,,,,In many cases DPC latency problems are caused by specific types of devices. So you should try disable this devices,,,,Network adapters for Ethernet and Wireless LAN (W-LAN),,

Internal modems

Internal sound devices (on-board sound systems)

Any PCI or PCI Express add-on card, any PCCard or ExpressCard, e.g. TV tuner cards, ISDN or DSL adapters, modems, etc.,,,,,disable them and look for the dpc latency program,,,if you disable the right device the bar will by green,,,then you found your broken(driver) device

I want to thank everyone for contributing here. This problem was driving me nuts! Ultimately, I used Yesmonkee's fix, and it worked great. I simply disabled this service and the godawful stutter/buzz is history! As best I can tell, the Intel Matrix Storage Event Monitor isn't critically needed, so if it's simply a matter of leaving it off, that sucker's staying off. Thanks again to Yesmonkee and everyone for all the help.

Hey, Kevin. No, I actually didn't dig deep enough into the thread to find the posts about fixing the IMS device. I was so happy that frigging buzz was gone when I disabled it, I figured I'd just leave the sucker off. Do you know of any particularly important use for it? If it has one, I'll dig up and install the fix, but if not, I figure the duct-tape fix will leave me contented for now.

BTW, let me thank you directly and sincerely for your original post regarding the IMS device, because I was 30 seconds from throwing my laptop across the room. :emotion-2:

Hey RickGershman, I haven't really been following this thread that closely anymore since I got my issue solved, but I noticed you indicated that you solved yours by using my original method of just turn the thing off....  Did you happen to see / try any of the "fixes" for the Intel Matrix Storage device?  After I disabled mine, another member posted a link to a fix for it, and I was able to re-enable it, install the fix, and everything works fine now - no stuttering even with it enabled....  Just curious.

*lol* - I felt the same way....  Well anyway, it certainly does have a purpose (or else it wouldn't be there).  But I'm not sure I have the technical expertise to really explain it adequately.  But in very basic terms, to the best of my limited understanding, it helps maximize system performance by managing data storage in your system....arrays, volumes, disks, ports, ATAPI devices.  Below are are three links that will tell you everything you'd ever want to know about it, as well as direct you to the Intel download page for the drivers required to run it again without causing your audio/video to stutter, skip, and drive you nuts.  i guess back a few months ago there had been a automated windows important update for this device that was corrupted causing the issue.  Happy New Year!

Hi! one question: does this solution only applies to the Inspiron 1545? will it work on my L502X? if so, how can I find the patch fot the IMS thats correct for my computer? I've been looking at the intel page, but as I'm not a super advaced computer user, I don't know how to find it.

Best regards and thank you all for your great advices!

Pd: will it help to install the Bios A07 ?

Try this link - may help detect what drivers you need - www.intel.com/.../detect

I tried the intel.com page but it comes up with this

Product Detected IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

Current Driver Installed 6.10.0.6217

This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates. More information>>

Then I go to Dell support and click on drivers and downloads and all I can get to is this page:

Drivers & Downloads

Does anyone know of a fix yet?
