XPS 15 9550 FHD with latest BIOS - 1.2.13 - fails to charge battery more than 60 percent

After updating BIOS to latest version (1.2.13), the battery only charges to 60 percent and then it stops.

- cable is connected and bios shows status as OK.

- if I disconnect and let the battery discharge below 50% the charging will kick in once I reconnect but will only charge until 60%

- tried changing battery modes in BIOS settings - standard / adaptive / express charge but regardless of which mode I choose charging seems to stop at 60%.

- behavior seems to be independent of OS as charging won't pass 60% even if laptop is turned off

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

So a fix is to downgrade to bios 1.1.15 until Dell fixes this issue. Copy of the bios can be found here downloads.dell.com/FOLDER03486977M/1/XPS_9550_1.1.15.exe

I think you can upgrade back up to 1.1.19, but at 1.1.20 you'll have the same issue again. I'm not sure, but I can definitely report that 1.1.15 bios brings back charging. Not sure if this allows external links, but this thread talks about the issue and fix fairly extensively. www.reddit.com/.../

Good luck!

Just wanted to add my voice to this. Maybe if we all just great separate posts this would get more traction?

this is definitely the best approach along with raising support requests directly with dell - its the only way I think to flag the issue by as many users as possible.

Its a shame they botched this release causing the battery issue - just like the screen flicker issue.

Frustrating that they seem to be failing to acknowledge it. Spent several frustrating hours trying to explain to support last night that no amount of diagnostics tests or swapping power adaptors would help them diagnose my issue, because my issue was this bios firmware lol :\

same 60% issue with my 9550.   on the phone with two dell techs for a few hours. They are clueless sending me parts and charger, I copied and pasted this whole forum and sent it to them .No useful response  they ran for the hills  Thanks for the work around 1.1.19  Here is the question if Bios 1.1.23 is corrupt why is it still on the dell website.. Why don't they at least take it off, .Maybe it only affects a handful of 9550s.  Really don.\'t know how that's possible..  I  can't figure these guys out.. I had a 9530 with coil whine just aa inebt company

Same not charging beyond 60%. Dell has replaced the battery TWICE. One time the sent a tech with a new battery and another time they had me send the PC to their Texas Resolution facility where the replaced the battery AGAIN, said system was tested and fixed. No that did not happen.

BIOS reset back to 1.1.19 and it solved the problem BUT a new problem arose as the system got so hot it was BLACK SCREENING after about a couple of minutes of use.

The system is a REPLACEMENT for one Dell took back after about 4 months of constant BSOD's and TWO trips to TEXAS where they replaced the system board and the SSD all to no avail. Current replacement system has lasted about 4 months of generally good performance. That is until his BIOS problem.

Their XPS (Premium Support People) do not have a clue as to the problem. This is one of Dell's Top of the line systems (Touch Screen, 32 GB Mem, 1 TB SSD, dual Graphics etc., and one of their costliest ones to boot. I think I may have purchased my last Dell system.

I called dell and they acted like they had no clue.  They wanted to walk me through the usual restarting the computer, letting them log in, ect.  I have no idea how they are so oblivious to this issue.

OAG1 That's an amazing story. Actually mindboggling. They just seem out of touch with everything from Windows 10 and its updates,to their own Hardware driver WEB page. In 2015 they released a version of Bios for there XPS 9530 that blew up large percentage of the mother boards  such a costly mistake for Dell and not even a year later they have another costly Bios Support Problem !!.  Is this the nature of the beast? To me it always come back to this question "Does Apple have these problems??". I really wonder since I have never owned an Apple computer

I have been using computers since the early 60's and could not wait to get my first PC. Due to cost at the time my first PC was an Apple //e. it was a very enjoyable 5 or 6 years with that thing. Went to Intel PC's in mid 80 and have been a Dell customer for the last 20 plus years (both Desktops and early luggable portables and now notebooks). I have NEVER had the problems that I have had with this 9550 - frankly I am looking forward to see what Apple does along the notebook (MacBook Pro) upgrades coming between next week and the end of the year. Most of my family has gone to a Apple MacBook over the last 10 years or so. They do not seem to have anything like this AND the Apple Stores are much closer and the people working there seem to have it together - (I confess to owning a IPad or two and a IPhone). I have never walked out of a Apple store with the problem that I walked in with. I do think Apple has gotten is too much phone oriented over the past few years but I still think their PC stuff is very good.

It just amazes me that Dell cannot see the problem when it is so apparent. I guess there are a lot of Dell users that never update their BIOS (even when Dell said the 1.2.13 was an Urgent or Required update hence they just don't see it.  Totally in the dark.

Makes you wonder whether Dell has any QC process in software releases and the competency of the coders at system  level if they know what they are doing.

Just adding my voice.  I have the same problem with 1.20.13 on my precision 5510.  Moving back is not really an option since this BIOS version is (barely) stable, unlike others.

Dell, when will a fixed BIOS version be released?

Same here with Precision 5510. There're only 2 bioses for this model and none works. Also, it might help if you mention battery capacity here. I have 6-cell.

Any fix for 5510 owners?

At the moment the fix is a mainboard replacement and then don't update the BIOS beyond 1.2.10. I had this done last Wednesday. The battery (6 cell 84Whr)  was also replaced although I'm not convinced that was necessary. However, as the BIOS update created this battery charge problem then a future update should be able to fix it.

The support person I spoke to last Tuesday claimed that he had escalated the issue and when he called me back on Thursday to check if the problem had been fixed he also said that a new BIOS would be released in the near future. However, it took until Friday for the 1.2.13 BIOS to be removed from the Precision 5510 downloads.
