7285 completely freezes. No BSOD or errors recorded.

I bought a 2nd hand, but pristine condition 7285, have completely updated all drivers from the dell website, and completely updated Windows 10 professional.

However it won't stop freezing up. Anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes after starting Windows, and no matter what I am doing on it, it just freezes completely  The keyboard backlight still comes on when touched, but the tablet is completely frozen until holding the power button to restart.

It seems to be reliable if I delete the graphics driver, but Windows soon downloads another and the problem starts again. Getting a bit desperate here.

How can I check if my Latitude 7285 has warranty? I've entered Service Tag here https://www.dell.com/support/home/si/en/sibsdt1/?app=products and it says that I have warranty, but when I bought it on eBay, it said no warranty (2 weeks old item).

I have this problem too. No BSOD. Just frozen. Happens with and without the keyboard attached. I’ve clean re-installed windows 10 pro. I’ve done all the Dell software, drivers, and BIOS updates. It’s done it since the first day I’ve owned it.

please help!

Exactly the same problem here - completely freezes - and have done a fresh Windows install to test.

This seems to be a problem with the 7285, given all the similar replies - any help with this please? It passes the diagnostic tests in the boot menu absolutely fine.

It's done it seemingly randomly, but both x264 and x265 videos have locked the system up totally. I've updated to latest Intel drivers, same issue.

EDIT: even locks up shortly after going to the video options in the Intel graphics control utility.

Disable BIOS->Performance->"Intel SpeedStep"/“Intel C-States Control”/“Intel Turboboost” will significantly reduce the probability of freezing.
But CPU TDP Limited to 5W.

EDIT: this didn't work, the lockups came back

I also suspected the Intel Rapid Storage driver, so I changed the BIOS from RAID (which uses the Intel driver) to AHCI (which doesn't).

But you can't just do that, because the OS won't boot after the change.  Instead, do this:

- run msconfig
- enable Safe Boot (default settings)
- reboot, go into the BIOS and change from RAID to AHCI
- boot into Windows (now in Safe Mode).
- run msconfig again - disable Safe Boot again.
- reboot

Now Windows should boot/run in AHCI mode.  I uninstalled the Intel RST driver just in-case.

So far it seems the lockups are fixed (will need more time to be sure).

... if that doesn't solve it for you, I also searched for an update of the 'Firmware' entry in Device Manager.  There was a new version and this seemed to be a downgrade.  Maybe that was the fix being rolled out.

.. unfortunately after running without issue for an hour or so, now the lockups are back.

Same as everyone else, hard lockups (even Caps Lock doesn't respond anymore), requires hard reboot.  All diagnostics pass, no errors in event log.  Lockups can occur on the lock screen or randomly any time later during uptime (usually within 20 mins or so).  Happens on battery or AC.

.. here's what seems to have worked - disabling the CPU C States in the BIOS (as was mentioned earlier in the thread).

I've now been running for several hours on AC and battery, with no lockups!  Of course C states save battery power, so disabling them isn't ideal.  But you can also mess with them using ThrottleStop.  I'm currently using it to enable the C1E state, and SpeedShift.  And battery life seems decent so far.  So it may not be an issue.

It's also possible that ThrottleStop can be used to disable only the troublesome C state(s), without needing to use the BIOS switch.  Needs more work - but the lockups seem cured.

Now in use all day (AC, battery, keyboard & without, touchscreen, pen, audio), and not a single lockup - the C States seem to be the issue.

If so, Dell - can a BIOS update fix it?  Happy to help troubleshoot.

Is it the C states and/or TurboBoost that you've disabled?

I disabled TurboBoost after the post a while ago, but just realised I left C states on - but I haven't been using my tablet much recently to be able to say whether or not that stopped the issue from happening.

I just disabled C States, that's all it took.

I also use a utility called ThrottleStop to enable the C1E state, and SpeedShift (which is more efficient & faster that SpeedStep).  That's been working fine too.  And battery life seems fine, maybe even better than before (go figure).

Hi,

Sorry, different person, same problem. Have just bought a second-hand 7285. Random freezes, no BSOD, only fixed by holding down power. Has even done it whilst trying to enter password to log-in, so literally two minutes after powering up. ePSA passed ok. Online diagnostics ok. Have restored cleaned Windows, updated all latest drivers and firmware etc etcv.

Reading this thread, it seems like the same motherboard issue, but don't know how to check which revision I have.

My service tag says 'Warranty expires 08-AUG-2026' but then when I try to access support it says expired.

Thanks, Mark

At the next freeze, try resetting the graphics driver-----win+cntrl+shift+b.This will cause the screen to flicker,no cause for concern.
When you changed the TDR in the registry, don't forget that in a 64 bit system.it is QWORD.In a 32 bit system it is DWORD and iin both cases is CASE sensitive.
The default time is 2 seconds and the time shown in the registry is in milliseconds,so make sure the zeros are correct.
The 'nvlddmkm.sys' is a proverbial pain in the whatever. The nvidea site has numerous complaints and I suggest a visit might be of some help,or not.
You could also check Reliability History for any relevant entries and also in the search box, type in---dxdiag--and see if it has any info.
