The NIVIDIA Problem continues
I have an I8200 with the nivida GeForce 2 ddr
and I have tried to install Mandrake 9.0.1
of course it took me a while to figure out what was wrong with my video
but I found just about everything I thought I need right here "thanks to all"
Well I got the kernel and glx rpm installed, and I changed "nv" to "nivida"
when I run startx I get big fat fatal server error that reads
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialze the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usalbe configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
My guess is that I need to do some configuring to the XF86Config-4 file
but I have no idea what needs to be done
anyone have this same problem
Please help
I need linux for a COCS4302 and I really dig Mandrake even thought they just filed ch11

Have you installed the nvidia drivers? If you haven't, go to www.nvidia.com to download the source file or whatever, install it, should be no problem then..!!

I was using RH7.3 and these instructions helped a lot.

rbgaynor, I have the same setup you have. i8100 laptop w/ Nvidia GeForce2 Go. Which driver should I look for on the Nvidia website? I am new to Linux. And I am researching what all I am going to need. I havent decided if I will go with Redhat or Mandrake. Will this driver work for both? I cant seem to find it.

go to http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191
then download these two files...
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.src.rpm

the steps on this page are the "means to success" for the rest
of the I82 community. Namly
download the drivers
install using rpm -ivh
edit the properties table
-change nv -> nvidia
-and change the sync rate and refresh rate as listed above
When my professors ease-up on the work load I will give it a go and
let everyone here know what problems I did or hopefully do not have
And in response to the guy that has not made
up his mind about Redhat or Mandrake
I have be a Mandrake defender in the past, in fact up to about the
time I started this thread, but since then Man-Soft has filed for
bankruptcy in France. I didn't see much future with the guys, as much
success as I have had in the past with them I decided to switch camps. I
aquuired a couple of versions of redhat 7.0 and 8.0 and have been very
pleased so far (I spend 4-6 hours a day in front of it). I am about to
buy a new DELL and am considering purchasing redhat equiped from the factory.

I have installed Redhat on my desktop
and that suits my needs for my classwork.
I just have not had time to do anything other than
install Redhat on my laptop. Right now I am using a
generic driver, and that allows me to see everything
fine but it is all inside of a small window on the
screen. Looks like the Dell splash screen you get
while the Bios loads.
I do have one question thought in Mandrake I could
choose an option that allowed me to boot straight into
a promt, without starting the GUI. How do I do that with
redhat. It is not an option with GRUB and when I tried
to switch to LILO, it ... well .... my computer didn't
like that.

wsome,
Which model of laptop are you using? I think i never get a small screen when booting up. I am using I8100 with no problem at all so far... If you see small screen when booting, you could try with fn + f5 to make it larger.
Well, for the boot manager, i can't really get you. For the mandrake, i think the default is lilo, but for the redhat should be grub. If u saying that you don't want it to start the GUI menu, and if you are using grub, you can set the time to 0 second. It will then boot straight away to linux without waiting at GUI menu. I hope these will help.

1) I have redhat 8.0 running on an inspiron 2650, 32mb invidia card, and a 15-inch display. I haven't downloaded the nvidia drivers, and I don't have the small screen problem. Dunno if this will help you at all, but I'm using the generic driver detected during installation, the DPI is 'unknown', horizontal refresh rate is 31.5-90, vertical is 59.0-75.0, and I *think* the monitor type I specified during installation was dell 1400x laptop display panel, but I could be wrong about that one.
2) Here's what to do to get a command line at startup instead of the gui:
as root, you need to modify the file /etc/inittab by changing the following line:
id:5:initdefault:
needs to be changed to
id:3:initdefault:
During bootup, this line tells the OS what runlevel to start in. By default, Red Hat starts
in runlevel 5, which starts X. Change it to 3, and X won't start until you tell it to.

You people are thinking too big... it is probaly something simple and it sounds like you didn't load the nvidia kernel module
From the CLI as root type "modprobe nvidia"
the lsmod | grep nvidia .... if you see it great now try to startx and what happens?
