Upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 on Dell XPS 13 9310

I have Ubuntu 20.04 pre-installed on my Dell XPS 13 laptop.
I would like to know if an upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 is possible now.
This latest version is LTS, so it is supposed to be accepted by Dell.
I would also like to know what is the best way to do it.

I did the upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 and it worked fine. However, I get the following warnings when I run "sudo apt-get update" after the upgrade. Does this mean that Dell has not yet published its drivers to the relevant repository for Ubuntu 22.04?

If I remember correctly, what I did was in Software and updates/ other software, leave everything that is marked Jammy.
 The rest remove the signal.
Then it will tell you to do an update, loading whatever is necessary.
I hope you are correct.

Yes, I have marked these two, but also several more, always related to Jammy Somerville.
I don't have any problem about it.

I don't know why you think Dell doesn't support Linux anymore.
I have received help from them many times.
But it is true that the staff does not have much knowledge about Linux, and I already complained about that too.

The two links you mention don't work.

Thanks. What I see under "Other Software" that's checked (and relevant):
1. http://dell.archive.canonical.com/jammy somerville

2. http://dell.archive.canonical.com/jammy somerville-bulbosaur

It seems the second one is the problematic one, based on the warnings above. Should I uncheck it?

I'm exchanging private messages with someone from Dell and it sounds like they no longer support Linux. I've asked them to confirm.

My understanding (perhaps incorrect) was that these warnings resulted from Ubuntu expecting to find some packages that normally are published/uploaded by Dell. And not finding them, because Dell for some reason did not upload them. I asked the Dell person about this and they basically refused to answer the question. They just repeatedly told me that Dell only supports the OEM OS, which in this case is Windows.

About Windows I will say this: on this laptop I tried Windows 10, I tried Windows 11, and then I installed Ubuntu 20.04. To my surprise, almost everything worked better out-of-the-box in Ubuntu than in Windows. I do have a bunch of prior experience with Linux, but in this case I didn't even need it: everything just worked. Possibly the webcam required some kind of proprietary Dell driver, but even in Windows it didn't work out-of-the-box.

Related question: I am running the 5.14.0-1051-oem kernel. Somewhere on this forum I read that the latest generic kernel is more secure. Do you have an opinion about this?

I have not had much luck contacting a Dell person. Can you ask this Dell person what the official Dell recommendation is regarding upgrading to 22.04?

My XPS 13 9310 came preinstalled with Ubuntu 20.04 with the claim that they supported this OS. That is why I purchased this particular machine. Is Dell reneging on this promise?

FWIW, just through the standard upgrading process I seem to have ended up with kernel 5.15.0-47-generic.

@rjl-csunPresumably if your laptop is also an XPS 13 9310 then it's physically identical to mine. So, whatever recommendations work for yours should also work for mine. Personally I would have happily bought a Dell laptop with Linux pre-installed, but they were not in stock at the time (January). Mine came with Windows 10.

Sorry, that last comment was a mistake. My kernel is the same as yours, @rebelrebel.

@rjl-csunIf your laptop came pre-installed with Ubuntu then it's a different situation. In my case the Dell person reached out to me via private message after I posted on this forum. Not sure what's the best way for you to reach out to them. If you succeed, let us know what they say...

@rjl-csunThe Dell person told me that when it comes to Linux, I'm on my own. They only support the OEM OS which is Windows in the case of this laptop.

Is there any chance we'll hear from Dell and find out what they recommend for those of us who purchased a 9310 installed with certified Ubuntu? Upgrade to 22.04 or not?

Hello.

I bought the Dell XPS 13 9310 with Windows pre-installed. I had removed windows, then installed Ubuntu 20.04 instead.

Although I had bought it with Windows, by installing Ubuntu, I still have the OEM version of Ubuntu :

steph@xps-13: uname -a
Linux xps-13 5.14.0-1054-oem #61-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 14 13:05:50 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

You who have installed ubuntu 22.04, do you still have the OEM kernel? You who have installed ubuntu 22.04, please, can you tell me what the "uname -a" command returns to you?

Thanks
