2405 High Pitched Squeal

Does anybody else have a high pitched squeal on their 2405fpw monitor? I just ordered one, heard a squeal about 2 days after recieving it. Then I recieved a new one, and it has a louder squeal than the first one. It's not a mind-blowing volume, but a subtle and constant squeal. I probably hear it more because I'm alone in a home-office and it's very quiet and pushed into a corner on my desk. I'm debating on returning it for a refund because I'm somewhat sensitive to the squeal. If everyone elses is super quiet, then I may just try my luck at another RMA if they let me. VERY ANNOYING! :-)

I'm glad I did some research before buying this LCD.  I even tried calling tech support to find out what the real deal is and to no surprise, the Dell automated phone menu has gotten worse since the last time I called a few years ago.  Now they have a voice recognition program that doesn't work and when I finally got past all the voice input requests, I was told the waiting time would be over 10 minutes to speak to a technician.  This is very disturbing, knowing that when I have to speak to a technician I will have to go through this every single time.  I don't think I'll be buying this item.

The first monitor I received had the squeal. After I returned it for a refund I waited two months and reorder. The second monitor, I've had it two weeks, has been working flawlessly - no squeal. With any luck it will keep working this way for a long time to come.

On my first monitor the problem was heat related. The monitor had to be on for an hour or so before the squeal would start. This would indicate to me that it's a component issue and not necessarily an inherent design flaw.

Here is an email I got from Dell today.

Hi James,

I have already check with the technical people on this, and it seems that there is no resolution for this, and the only way to get around it is try to keep the monitor in a cold room condition.

If you would like for a refund on the LCD Monitor, i would be able to help you on this.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Sorry, but keeping my room at 65 degrees is just not worth it to me.

I don't know why some monitors have noise and some ones don't? They have the same components. Or every monitor will become nosiy after some time.

My guess is that some people work in super cool environments. It is possible that when winter hits the states and heaters get used that you will see a rash of out of warranty users with squeal problems.

I just recieved this monitor yesterday. I had it running for about 8 hours yesterday. No squeal. But as mentioned above it was running in a very cool basement.

I will try it out when I can. The cool basement I'm talking about is my apartment and I have no control over the A/C. Let's just I have to turn on my baseboard heaters some nights! But you're right. I should try it somewhere warmer to find out.

Try to put it in a hot environment and test it. So you can make sure whether you will keep it. We are also interested in the result

I called Dell sales and asked the sales person if he knew of any high pitch sqeal issues with this specific monitor....I ended up talking to myself because the gentleman decided to avoid the question by hanging up on me.  I then called tech support and ended up speaking to someone in India who could barely speak English and couldn't comprehend that I had a simple question.  He kept asking me for my express service tag number.  According to him, he couldn't speak to me if I didn't have a service tag number.  Basically, Dell avoided answering my question.  All this after holding for more than 10 minutes.  The answer to my question is that a large majority of these 24 inch Ultrasharp 2405's have a manufacturing defect that causes a high pitch sqeal and if your ears are sensitive to high frequency sounds, it will drive you crazy.

Here's something interesting:

Dell sales= Zero telephone hold time, located in the U.S.A., sales representatives speak fluent english.

Dell tech support= 10 minutes hold time, located in India, technicians speak very poor english and fail to comprehend.

Hmmmm?

I am on my second monitor.  The first was terrible after an hour.  The second has been working great for about 3 days.  Then the whining started after working for about 4 or 5 hours.  THEN, when I shut one of my browser windows, it completely stopped.  Now it's find.  Coincidence, maybe.  Sketchy hardware, perhaps.  Dell needs to respond with a statement from manufaturing or engineering about this issue.  It is clear that some monitors are having problems.  Most are not.

You want to keep your monitor or return it. THe noise is repeatable? In warm environment, about several hours working, it will become louder?

EVERY MONITOR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM? ?? IT WILL BE DESIGN PROBLEM

My first 2405 had a very loud noise after an hour or two.  I'm on my second one and it also has the noise but it is a little softer.  It is still however, pretty noticeable.  I'm still within my 21 days so I think I'm going to setup another exchange.  This is such a nice LCD but the noise may end up being a dealbreaker.  It seems that many have quiet LCD's so I'm still holding out hope.  I'm certainly interested in hearing what Dell discovers about this issue as it seems there have been a lot of recent complaints.

Well I hear the high pitch tone now. (Even in my cool basement :)). I have to say though, it doesn't really surprise nor bother me based on how big and bright this thing is ( I have the brightness at 80). It sounds similar to the high pitch (but faint) tones that come out of a TV set as the TV image changes to me. I didn't notice it until I was in complete silence and even then it wasn't that noticeable over the sound of my laptop fans. I guess it all depends on how much you'll be using the screen in total silence. If I play a movie, music, turn my TV on, turn my Xbox on, or my fridge or air conditioning turns on; I don't hear it. I personally am not sending this thing of beauty back for something this (im my opinon) trivial only to get one that does the same thing and/or has a few dead pixels in it or something.

You mean you become more sensitive to small sound than before because of this unnormal LCD monitor? Do you think this will bother you in the future? I guess you will use it for several years if you decide to keep it.

I would like like to further add that after listening for the squeal and writing the above message last night, my ears were completely attuned to the smallest sounds. When I went to bed I could hear my alarm clock humming which is something I've never heard before.
