U2414H, DP MST daisy chain issues

Hello,

I've got what appears to be a common problem with no solution on these pages; with DisplayPort MST.

I got two of these Dell monitors over the weekend, and spent around 3 hours trying to get MST to work with them. I got there eventually, and they worked great for about 36 hours.

In that time my computer rebooted twice with no issues. However, this morning I got up, powered on and the second in chain (End of my MST chain) suddenly is not recognized as a monitor. It displays my desktop, but only at 640x480. AMD Catalyst can see it, but refers to it as "No Display Connected".

My configuration is a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 powering these two Dells (on a single DP MST chain), a Compaq Q2022a on HDMI and another on DVI. The first dell also has a USB Bluetooth and USB WiFi dongles plugged in, and the second dell draws it's USB capabilities from the first. Both were working absolutely fine when I went to bed, and this morning the second in the chain wasn't.

I'm looking to buy up to four more of these for a stacked tri-monitor setup, but I need them to be more reliable before I can justify spending that much! I love the thin bezel, and MST is a must for the setup I want, but the reliability is an essential too, I don't want to spend an hour a day fixing it all...

Thanks

For anyone interested, my work-around is as follows:

- Unplug monitor two from monitor one

- Disable MST on monitor 1

- Re-enable MST on monitor 1

- Plug monitor 2 back into 1

- Hold power for around 8 seconds on monitor 2

Seems to work after doing that, unreliably.

I found the solution for this issue, at least for Windows 8.1.

Plug in the cables as described in earlier posts.

Go to -> Control options in windows,  -> system/security options, -> energy options, choose an ENERGY SCHEDULE with HIGH performance. (Not balanced, which is set as standard).

Rough translation, since english aint my OS language.

And ENABLE DP 1.2 on ALL  screens, even the last one in order.

It did not matter in which order I enabled this. If that wouldn't work for you just try and disable the last screen in order.

TO ENABLE/DISABLE DP 1.2 when the monitor is asleep/no source mode. HOLD the middle (MENU) button out of the 5 total there is, for ~10 sec. You have to press it once before you hold it in, so that the little menu is up.

**Perhaps there are energy options for certain graphic cards that might have to be changed as well. Just check your configs! I'm using Nvidia GTX 770 2gb

Good luck all! Hope I help someone at least!

Seems my question has been missed, and I'l still having issues with this. It seems like a common problem too.

It's my first Dell product, and so far I'm certainly not impressed. Considering returning them and going with the Asus ones I was looking at instead... It'd be a shame as they have a thicker bezel, but at least they work.

Flenix,

Remove the Compaq Q2022a and other monitor from the troubleshooting. Disconnect the USB Bluetooth and USB WiFi while troubleshooting. Use only the two U2414H in this configuration =

1. Computer Radeon HD7950 mDP --> Dell mDP to DP cable --> Primary U2414H DP in (DP 1.2 Enabled)

2. Primary U2414H DP out --Dell DP to mDP cable --> Secondary U2414H mDP in (DP 1.2 Disabled)

Once setup, test by restarting the computer several times. The test with shutting it off, then on several times.

For temporary solution, every times your computer does not detect your U2414H monitor, please try unplug power cable both of them , wait for 5 sec to let power light button totally off, then replug power cable again, You will see DELL logo in circle , then your PC will detect these monitors.

I'm having the the same issue with exactly the same symptom. I am not running DP 1.2 with MST though, so it it not related to that. I posted a question whether Dell is aware of the problem and is a in-field firmware update is even possible (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19566131.aspx) but so far no answer unfortunately. One symptom you describe that I also see but didn't mention in my post is that Catalyst shows the monitor as not connected while Windows does see it but doesn't get the resolutions right.

Forgot one thing:

  • Delete all the Generic Monitor entries which were created when the monitor was not recognized completely (These will get recreated later again tough when DP communication fails again)

Flenix, here is something to try which *appears* to have made recognition of the monitors (with the right resolution and refresh rate) a more reliable for me. It probably doesn't eliminate the root cause since that has to be somewhere in either firmware or hardware, but right now it seem like this improved things while not eliminating them completely. I'd appreciate if you let me know whether this did anything for you. Here is the step-by-step (if you are using Windows)

  • Go to Device Manager
  • Activate: View > Show Hidden Devices
  • Open Monitors
  • Make sure all U2414Hs are physically connected to the PC
  • Delete all grayed out monitors (the connected ones should be full color
  • Possibly do the same for graphics card if it is listed multiple times and some are grayed out

Good luck.

Actually it probably didn't do anything for me. It looked like it improve things for a days or two, but now I'm back to normal DP despite a "clean" device manager.

I've got two of the same monitor with this exact problem. Unfortunately, the workaround of unplugging, replugging etc. in this thread didn't work for me. I'm very disappointed with these monitors. This had been my first Dell purchase, and I had been excited about the specs and how nice the display looks. Given how difficult Dell makes it to contact them about this, and the zero level of support we're getting, this is probably going to be my last Dell purchase.

TraceyC77,

What specific computer?
What video card?
What ports are on the video card?
What operating system?
In detail, describe how the two U2414H are connected to the computer using what cabling and ports. Write it using this as a template:

1. Computer Radeon HD7950 mDP --> Dell mDP to DP cable --> Primary U2414H DP in (DP 1.2 Enabled)

2. Primary U2414H DP out --Dell DP to mDP cable --> Secondary U2414H mDP in (DP 1.2 Disabled)

Chris; be honest - have you seen ANYONE who has successfully got MST working, reliably and flawlessly?
Maybe you should grab a couple of these from the warehouse and try it out yourself. It's quite clearly a fault in the product, not a fault with our systems; it's happening to everyone who uses MST regardless of setup; even my friend with a nVidia card gets it.

I should clarify I mean that once they got it working, they can stop and start it at will. My setup is working right now, but I can't use any other ports on the monitor or it kills it again; which means I can't use my HDMI devices like I originally planned.

That's true...

I have a 3x Screen setup.

I got it working for exactly 2 days without an issue following exactly Dells instructions. Day 3 , turned on the screen and bingo no more image. That was it, I gave up.

I am now using 2x DVI to HDMI and 1 Pure HDMI. I avoid the DP, it just does not work reliably.

I think there are two issues here with the U2414H:

1. The MST on the U2414H simply doesn't work in a reliable fashion other than a short period of time.

2. Secondly there is a known issue for NVIDIA users where NVIDIA cards are detecting the Monitor as a TV when its connected to HDMI or Displayport and sends the wrong color display information. To be fair, this isn't Dell's Fault. This a Nvidia Driver issue as the problems occur with other makes of monitors as well.

Problem #1, I feel Dell has an obligation to fix. It never should have been released in the state in was in, and Dell has been dragging its heels, offering the same solution the simply does not work. And I think all the posts with people all with the exact same issue to proof enough there IS an issue. \

I work on a Servicedesk too, and when I cannot reproduce the issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist for the user. I admit that unlike Chris I do have the added advantage of seeing the user directly...

I like my monitors, its a great panel, and I love the slim bezel design. It was exactly what I wanted, but I gotta be honest, I can't recommend them to anyone right now (especially Nvidia users) because of these problems except as a single display.

Its quite Unfortunate...

Chris,

I'm with Flenix. This is a problem with the MST implementation on these monitors. I hope you're not thinking I have something hooked up funny. I'm hoping you're collecting data to bring to Dell so they can fix the actual issue. I'll tell you this is likely the way Dell reports itself to Windows 7. When I hook up my Ubuntu Linux laptop to the Displayport input, I can get the two monitors daisy chained.

Here are the specs on the problematic setup

What specific computer?  - Prostar custom laptop
What video card?  -  nvidia GeForce GTX680M (I checked, their driver supports daisy chained DisplayPort 1.2)
What ports are on the video card?  - 1 x DisplayPort 1.2 / 1 x HDMI / 1 x DVI
What operating system?  - Windows 7 64-bit

In detail, describe how the two U2414H are connected to the computer using what cabling and ports.

1. Laptop Geforce GTX680M --> Dell DP to mDP cable --> Primary U2414H mDP in (DP 1.2 Enabled)

2. Primary U2414H DP out --> DP to DP 1.2 cable --> Secondary U2414H DP in (DP 1.2 Enabled)

We are not having any issues testing two U2414H on several Latitude laptops and Alienware desktop. The last U2414H in the chain should have DP 1.2 disabled.
