U2724D, issues that could be resolve by firmware

Dell U2724D

Dell U2724D

I just purchased two U2724D monitors are they have two obvious flaws that I believe can be easily addressed with a firmware update. Dell, can you please implement this firmware update? Thanks in advance!

The two issues are related to:

1. Auto Brightness

2. Auto input

Details:

1.

In its current state, the Auto Brightness feature does not vary much between the brightness range levels as far as I can tell. In a brightly lit room I estimate the monitor is at 10% brightness. In a dark room, 0% brightness. In both cases the monitor is too dark to use.

The "Auto Brightness" setting has a related setting, "Auto Brightness Range Level". This setting has three options: high, medium and low. Modifying the code so ensure that each of those settings lowest brightness level is the highest brightness level of the one below it would be perfect.
Example Auto Brightness Range Level scaling:
High setting brightness range: 60-40% brightness.
Medium setting brightness range: 40-20% brightness.
Low setting brightness range: 20-0%% brightness.
This is just an idea on implementation. I'm sure your engineers know much better than me.
2.
When the input is set to "Auto" and the monitor is already receiving a signal via HDMI and then it receives a signal via DisplayPort, the monitor will switch to the DisplayPort signal automatically. This should only happen if there is no already established signal; it should have remained on the HDMI signal until the user intentionally switches the monitor to the DisplayPort signal.
I look forward to seeing these changed implemented! Thanks again!

Dell engineers design team does not monitor this forum.  You can submit your input through feedback form at Dell design system instead  https://www.delldesignsystem.com/contact/feedback/

I updated to firmware version M3B102 hoping it would cure the auto brightness problem I'm having but it didn't help. Replacement monitor is on the way.

@grybrnr Get ready for disappointment. I've been through eight U2724D monitors due to quality control issues [how do none of them match with a Delta E<2?!]. At least the auto-dimming feature was consistently bad throughout. I opened a BBB case and finally got someone from Dell who would pass my feedback along to their engineering team as opposed to giving me generic responses. Per our discussions the idea is to allow the user to define the actual brightness percentiles per auto brightness range level. We'll see if it actually gets implemented, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.

MKDLMR You were correct the replacement behaved similarly so back it goes. It was definitely a refurbish and showed it. I've turned the auto brightness off on mine and I'm still seeing minute changes to brightness and color, auto color is also set to off.

I'm in luck as reviewing terms of sale I can return it.
