U4021QW, macOS firmware update fails

Hello,

I tried to update the firmware of my U4021QW from my Apple MBP M1, but it  fails after ~1 min with no clear explanation. The utility reports "Update error. See Help for step by step instructions to retry update"

I followed the instructions several times, but with no success (disconnect everything, reconnect and try again).

Tried both through Thunderbolt 3 and with the uplink USB cable.

Luckily, the U4021QW reboots wit the old firmware and continue to work with no problems. However it shows a message at startup affirming that a firmware update has failed and I should try again. Any idea?

Here is the screenshot of the update utility:

Finally got it to complete successfully!

What I did:

1. Reboot computer, make sure nothing is running (ie. Dell Display Manager, Steam, AntiVirus, Teams, Zoom, Discord, etc.)

2. Disconnected keyboard and mouse from monitor USB ports.

And then it was able to complete without any errors.

I experienced issues updating the firmware with the latest M2T102 released on November 1st. I followed the instructions and suggestions listed on this community but without success. The following setup and action was successful. Figured I'd share if it helps someone.

Connections:

PC -> Displayport -> Monitor

PC -> USB-A to USB-B (using included cable that came with monitor) -> Monitor

Shut off all programs

*** What I actually believe made a difference as it was the first and only time I did it ***

On the monitor, using the stick in the back I navigated to the others / factory reset and reset the monitor.

When the monitor reboot/reset it asked if I wanted to enable always on thunderbolt/usb-c charing and I selected yes (not sure what I had it set to before).

I then performed the update from the monitor firmware update utility.

My desktop is Windows 10, AMD Ryzen, Asus Crosshair Dark Hero X570 chipset.

Cheers

FINALLY, I was able to update the firmware. As correctly pointed out by DELL, all USB devices should be disconnected. In my previous tentatives, I forgot to unplug a webcam. That was the cause for the failed update. After disconnecting it the update successfully finished through the thunderbolt cable.

I am seeing exactly the same error (screenshot of the OP is 1-to-1 what I have). MacOS 11.6, Macbook Pro M1.

Same error, Intel Mac here (non M1), so I don't think this is an M1 only issue.

Same problem here, Windows 10 firmware fails to update and now the monitor says to update firmware when powered on. Any way to fix this and update the firmware successfully?

Hi,

Have you performed the steps that is suggested in Private message?

I need to report the firmware update issue from M2T101 to M2T102 on macOS resulting in the same error as the original reporter and in another thread (https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U4021QW-macOS-firmware-update-fails/td-p/8045351). I used the Dell_MonitorFirmwareUpdateUtility_U4021QW_M2T102.pkg with confirmed SHA256 3d5ef37f709550339e11c525ce172d656b609a8aac4e439bec0b6172e88ec7f1.

During the update the monitor "restarted" and the firmware update utility remained as in the attached screenshot.

The instructions pdf which comes with the package tells to connect the monitor using the usb upstream cable to the mac. In my first attempt, I connected only the usb upstream cable from the monitor to the macbook without the thunderbolt cable. The update utility did not recognize the monitor.

In the second attempt, I connected the monitor with the thunderbolt cable which is my regular configuration. The update utility recognized the monitor but the update failed as reported below. I did not perform further attempts.

Fortunately, the monitor works as before after the failed firmware update. However, when the monitor is started, a note shows up on the display which refers to the failed update attempt and suggest to perform the update again.

With the other reports in the forum, the update feels like a beta test. It is not satisfying, that despite the known issues, Dell still offers the update for download.

**Issue:** Firmware update not working on Mac OS for U4021QW. (see photos and confirmation details below)

**Condition after failed update** Monitor shows picture as usual; monitor menu reports firmware M2T101; monitor shows "firmware update failed" when started

**Customer feeling after failed update** Helpless; Fear of further firmware update attempts

**Display Model:** U4021QW

**Display Firmware:** M2T101

**Mac OS Version:** 11.5.1 (20G80)

**Laptop Spec:** MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports), 2,7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

**Configuration** Thunderbolt 3 cable from monitor to laptop (cable that was included with monitor). Thunderbolt port on monitor is the one with the power delivery. Laptop is not connected to any other monitor or USB device.

Neither the firmware update through windows 10 works — it behaves the same.

It’s been already a month and still no fixes around. At least it did not brick the display…

* Disconnect all USB peripherals from the monitor. Reconnect them directly to the PC USB ports

* Turn off all non-essential software (Dell Display Manager, Steam, AntiVirus, Teams, Zoom, Discord, etc.)

PC HDMI out port --> U4021QW HDMI to HDMI cable --> U4021QW HDMI 1 in port
Monitor USB Type-B downstream port --> USB Type-B to A cable --> PC USB Type-A port

PC HDMI out port --> U4021QW HDMI to HDMI cable --> U4021QW HDMI 2 in port
Monitor USB Type-B downstream port --> USB Type-B to A cable --> PC USB Type-A port

PC DP put port --> U4021QW DP to DP cable --> U4021QW DP in port
Monitor USB Type-B downstream port --> USB Type-B to A cable --> PC USB Type-A port

PC USB Type-C out port --> U4021QW TB4/USB Type-C to C cable --> U4021QW TB3/DP in port
Monitor USB Type-B downstream port --> USB Type-B to A cable --> PC USB Type-A port
