D-Link Router and PowerConnect Switch

Hi, I need some help connecting a D-link wired 4 port router and a Dell PowerConnect 2216 switch. I'm kind of a newbe when it comes to switchs. My question is we are connecting 7 systems together. 4 systems we want to have internet access, the other 3 we do not want on the internet. Do I link the router to the switch then ethernet out to each computer? Is this possible and still have internet access on the systems I want to have on but still share files with all of them. 6 systems are WinXP Home, 1 is WinXP Pro. My modem connects to the wan port on the router, do I run a ethernet cable from one of the open 4 ports on the router to port #1 on the switch? Will I have internet access on the systems I want ?

Thanks

kinda depends on what the router do.  that is an ummanaged switch, right?

Consider the following setup.  Internet Connection --> DLINK Router's WAN Port.

DLink Router's LAN port --> Port on the Switch.  Other computers (all of them) to other ports on the switch.

Easiset way to limit internet access is with MAC filtering on the router.  Setup rules to deny internet traffic based on their MAC address (my $10 dlink router can do this so I assume it's pretty common).  If the computer have static IP addresses you could also setup firewall rules to deny all traffic from them to the WAN and from the WAN to them.

You may also need a Ethernet Cross over cable from the router LAN port to the switch. Some newer devices can accept both, so try what you have and if it doesn't light the link lights, change to the cross over.

You should have an uplink port that you can use in place of a cross-over cable on the router. This may disable one of the other available ports or there may be a uplink swith you need to hit.

I don't think there is a seperate uplink port (from looking at the switch).  Switch is auto MDI/MDIX so a cross over cable won't hurt but also isn't needed.

See if I understand this correctly, Run a regular ethernet cable from one of my 4 ports on my D-Link router to any port on the switch. Will this give all my computers internet access if I so desire. Do I need to set any ip address's in any of the computers?

Dlink LAN port (any of them) to any port of the switch.  Any computer then connected to the switch would then basically be the same as if they had been connected to the other LAN ports on the router.

Assuming you don't have any special rules in place, then anything connected to the switch would have internet access.

It might help if you remember that the 4 LAN ports on your router are really just a switch themsevles.

Everything is up and running. How shut off internet access to some of the computers but still have network access?

from my other post there are two basic ways to do this.  many routers let you filter internet access based on mac filters.  if yours does, you could move certain clients to the excluded/restricted list.  often such rules are under a parental controls section.

alternatively, if they have static IPs, you could setup firewall rules to deny WAN traffic to and from those specific internal (LAN) IPs that you didn't want to have net access.
