Howdy:

I can use Internet Explorer to surf the World Wide Web but when I try to download updates for applications such as Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search&Destroy I cannot get them. The same thing happens at the Microsoft Windows Update site.

Windows firewall is off. No other firewall used

Anybody know what is going on?

Uh, never mind. I figured it out. For some reason Norton Internet Security (which was only a 60-day demo install) was resident on my Inspiron 700m as a folder separate from Program Files. It was not evident on the Start/Control Panel/ Add/Remove Program nor was there an uninstall in the NIS folder. I went to Symantec and found an extraordinary executable that would eliminate all of the remaining NIS files. Viola!

Nuff said. Now I can ftp as well as www.
