No sound from Soundblaster Live 24 on Dimension 8400

Have seen many different posts regarding no sound from a Soundblaster Live 24 card, but not finding solution to my problem. Soundblaster Live 24 card stopped working for me -- unknown reason. Tried reinstalling driver w/ no results. Have installed the Chipset (R91894) from Dell website and drivers from both original CD and Windows Update. Following driver installation, reboot computer only to have Multimedia Audio Controller disabled. Enable driver, reboot computer, and Device Manager indicates driver installation error code 18. Repair driver, reboot computer only to now have drivers not found for this device. Have uninstalled drivers, removed any Soundblaster software, removed any registry elements relating to Soundblaster, Creative Labs, ...

I work with computers on a regular basis, and have never experienced so much frustration with a driver/computer as the Dimension 8400. Would like to junk it, but can't afford a different computer. Would greatly appreciate any different ideas to get my sound back!

If you have the optional PCI Soundblaster Live 24 card (as I do in this Dimension 9100) then you want the integrated audio disabled in the bios setup program.  Can you enter the setup program and verify integrated audio is disabled?  If so, and you then install the correct Live 24 driver, the sound should work correctly.   The live 24 driver is located here:  http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=206&prodID=10315&prodName=Live!%2024-bit&subCatName=Live!&CatName=Sound+Blaster

Yes, I have the integrated audio disabled in BIOS. Tried your driver, still no luck -- same round of results. After installing the Creative drivers/programs, rebooting the computer, Device Manager indicates "The drivers for this device are not installed. Code (28)". I choose reinstall drivers, which ends up with an error "Access is Denied" from the Windows Hardware Update Wizard. If I try to use Creative Device Control, it doesn't detect any devices. Once I reboot again, the usual cycle of device not found, drivers not found, ... starts all over again.

Next idea?

Sorry, just not sure what else to recommend as you've done everything I know to resolve this issue.  One time I just had to replace a sound card when no amount of coaxing could get it to go.  A new inexpensive sound card solved the problem instantly.  :emotion-6:
