one thing that might have caused confusion is 3010 MT and SFF have different BIOS by Dell. That is incorrect. Dell does not write different bios for same model pc of different form factor. If you go to driver support, you can see there is only one bios for the model (although there are different versions).
TDP is not reason why your i5-2400 does not post. If your i5 works in another pc, then your 3010 bios is preventing it from post. It may need a bios reset such as clearing CMOs or replace CMOs battery w a new one.
Thanks for the reply. I don't think it is the bios - I cleared I it before starting anyway, plus all the others work ok. Unfortunately I don't have another motherboard to check the i5 2400 on, which is kind of the problem. I was hoping it would be confirmed that the 3010 SFF had a Bios lock out on CPUs with a TDP of 95c or greater. However, if not, have to try something else! Cheers!
Thanks for your reply. Is the I5 2400 locked out of the SFF version at a BIOS level? I've actually got the motherboard working fine in a different case and a much better PSU (Corsair 500W), so the actual PSU is not a problem - unless 95w TDP CPUs are locked out of the SFF motherboard at a BIOS level due to VRM / assumed PSU issues - but allowed on the 3010 MT motherboard due to better VRMs / assumed better PSU?

There is no SFF bios lock on i5-2400. The link I sent last time verified that they are compatible. https://www.backmarket.co.uk/second-hand-dell-optiplex-3010-sff-core-i5-2400-31-hdd-1-tb-8gb/202201.html

@mav77uk
Smaller models need the low power SR00S I5 2400S 65W series.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/154635584973
The "tower" 3010 is not a FULL Tower and only has 275W PSU, Desktop has 250W PSU, SFF only has 240W PSU. So using 95W cpu is a problem.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/273885233434
Max Cpu for 3010 is
Intel® Core™ i5-3450 / 3.10GHz, 77W
Smaller units have MUCH Smaller power supplies.
SR00Q Intel Core i5-2400 95W
