980 DT, GPU and CPU upgrades
So I have not been able to find any information on this subject, I have an optiplex 980 DT, it has already been upgraded so to speak. Currently I am running
windows 10
16 GB ram
intel core i5 650
Radeon HD 7750
The motherboard is the stock board and the power supply is a 255w
I am wondering if 1. I can upgrade my graphics to a newer better one and 2. if I can do the same with my processor.
I bought an intel i5 680 but it didn't take, it outright told me that, that processor was not compatible, Currently I am thinking of buying an i7 870, and either upgrading to the Radeon HD 7790 or going with the NVIDIA geforce gtx 750, first I would like to get some opinions we are looking at an upwards of a $500 buy and I would like to know if these would even work. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would not spend $500 on an eight year old system.
The Radeon HD 7790 requires a 450w PSU
The GeForce GTX 745 requires a 400w PSU
So you are looking at replacing the PSU for a minimum of $40. For $549, you could get the low end 2018 XPS 8930.

Be sure to update your bios to the latest version before you try the i5-680. That's an excellent processor to use as I can't tell much of a difference between those and my i5-2500 and i7-2600k systems. Couple with with a nice gpu as you've mentioned and you're set for a while.
And even if you have to upgrade the power supply for the gpu, it's not a loss as both the power supply and gpu are easily moved to a new system. I would couple the i5-680 with a 400w-500w power supply as you find one on sale for $20 and then a 1060 when those are under $100 and you'll have a serious wallup in the pants from the i5-650 and the 7750.

980 power supply connector is NON STANDARD.

Non Tower systems would need to have the power supply OUTSIDE the case. There is no path to standard case for any 980.
