Dell Optiplex 990 doesn’t detect memory modules

Hello,

My mom bought this used Dell Optiplex 990 around a few months ago, it was working pretty fine and all until when we move to our new house, the computer doesn’t work and the 1 and 3 lights turn on (I don’t remember if the power button’s light was on or not). I read some solutions online and decided to remove the circle battery for around 15 minutes and put it back on again. After turning on it shows a blue light on the power button and the 1 light, read the wiki and it says that the computer isn’t detecting the memory modules (which I think are the ram sticks). I also tried removing and place the ram sticks back but still the same result. I’m not a tech kinda guy so I would be glad if someone could explain to me the way that I can understand.

Try replace the cmos battery with a new battery cr2032 ($1-2) and clear cmos settings via motherboard RTCRST jumper.  Sorry if the second step is a bit technical.

Blue power button is good. 1 3 led (manual p.73)

Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred.

remove all ram sticks, install only one ram stick in DIMM #1.  Use proper memory installation technique.  Try a couple of times.  Memory can only be installed in one direction.  You should hear two clearly audible simultaneous clicks as the stick snaps into DIMM slot. If pc boots, shut down, inser second ram stick, test again…

if none of the ram works, inspect for physical damage to DIMM #1 slot in case there was inadvertent trauma.  If no visible damage, get a new replacement DDR3 2GB or 4GB ram stick, pc3-10600U.
