Optiplex 3010 Fans

Ok thanks. I'll test if the fan works in the header, and if it doesn't, Ill just connect it directly to the psu using a molex connector.

There is confusing info on 3010 MT motherboard fan header. Based on OP and eBay pic of actual motherboard it is industry standard 3 pin.

@redxps630 can chime in again if he wants, but I think it's safer to use an adapter/splitter like I mentioned rather than chance frying a fan.  You can ways see if there's youtube videos on it too.

There seems to be conflicting info on system fan header.

If the 3010 motherboard system fan header uses industry standard 3 pin (usually white), then no problem swapping fan to the Thermaltake one.

some Dell online manual for 3010 MT used spurious picture showing 4 wire 5 pin proprietary fan connector.  Dell community discussion also mentioned such.

Ok thanks for all of the replies. To be absolutely sure, I'll try using a voltage meter on the fan headers. Is it safe to do so? I don't want to risk frying something.

The following directly from Dell literature uses ? erroneous picture depicting 4 wire 5 pin sys fan header.  Is it possible Dell used different OEM design motherboard that has such subtle variation of fan header?  If yes seems tricky to end user.

In 2018 Dell user reported “I've installed a 3 pin 120mm case fan into my 3010 MT and connected it to the empty FAN_SYS1 header. The fan spins when the machine boots then does nothing, even with fan control override set in bios. Either way the fan will not stay on.” this seem to be a more treacherous pinout of motherboard that seems like industry standard in physical appearance but may have proprietary pinout?  Caveat emptor.

Due to Dell being proprietary, one can't expect wire colors from an aftermarket fan to match voltages/current of a Dell fan.

It would help to have more info.  Are you sure it will fit or are you cutting a hole in the case side panel?  Is this an additional fan or does it take the place of a Dell fan?  If it doesn't take the place of a Dell fan, a sata power splitter/adapter will do just fine.

Amazon also has adapters if it does take the place of a Dell fan.  If so, there is a chance of error msg. on startup.

In my 7010 MT, I fit a 90mm blue led fan in the front and another, but 80mm, in the rear.  I had as one of the fans in my 755, but it was too big for my 7010.

I'm mounting an intake fan to the front. I'm converting it to a gaming pc. It's a hand me down system that was barely used. The pin connectors seem industry standard, and the colors on the outtake fan line up like the industry standard as well. Idk if it's the same voltage as you said though. I'm connecting it the the fan sys 1 connector. It's right next to the orange cable on the second picture.

Also one more thing, would the pc recognize the fan if I'm able to get it to work on the header?

Clarification:  Those were fans I added.  They didn't take the place of any Dell fans.

There's a catch with the front grille on 3010's, 7010's, etc. - Led fans don't show thru as much as I would like, especially not compared to a previous 755.  Included photos for the fun of it.  And remember, 120mm fan won't fit in the front of 3010.

Im upgrading the ram, psu, storage, and other parts of the pc. The psu im getting is a 500w Aresgame 80+ Bronze Certified psu. it has molex connectors.

im ugrading my psu to support an rx570/580/480, depending on whichever one is not ludicrously expensive when i buy it.

Same fan I got, not bad.  It's a little noisy on max RPM, but not bothersome.  I think my 3-speed 120mm Antec might've been a little quieter, as the larger the fan, the less it has to work to move the same air.

most likely new fan will not work properly. another user reported similar experience in 2020.

stock psu for 3010 has no 4 pin molex connector. to have molex one needs to change psu to one that has 4 pin molex connector.  most relatively modern Dell OEM psu drops molex connector.
