Can anyone advise me as to Intel i5 or i7 compatibility with my motherboard? I would like to upgrade.
Current CPU Intel Core i3 3225
Motherboard Dell model 042P49 PCI Express 2.0
Memory DDR3 8G
Bios A22

Assuming you have an Optiplex 3010, you did not list the model number, the i7-3770 would be the best CPU you could install. With an i7 you may need better cooling but the stock cooler should work.

JOcean is spot on. the motherboard 42P49 is 3010. Dell validated cpu is i5-3450.
i7-3770 would work too.

Thank you so much for the info and tech guide. My GPU is a HD 4000. It does not appear that I would have change that. Do you agree?

for general desktop display the Intel integrated graphics HD 4000 is fine.
Intel HD Graphics 4000 supports resolution up to 1920×1200 through HDMI and 2560×1600 through DisplayPort
for higher spatial resolution or for gaming then you need to consider upgrade to a discrete graphics card.
