Dell PowerEdge T130 Memory Upgrade

I am using a Dell PowerEdge T130 server. The server currently has the following memory modules installed:

    • 1x Hynix 8GB PC4-17000 2133MHz ECC Dual Rank RDIMM Memory HMA41GU7AFR8N-TF

    • 1x Samsung DDR4-2133 8GB/1Gx72 ECC CL15 Server Memory M391A1G43DB0-CPB

I purchased two new memory modules:

    • 2x Micron MTA18ASF1G72PZ-2G1A2IG 8GB PC4-17000 1Rx4 PC4-2133P ECC

However, the server does not work when I install the new memory modules.

Could the new memory modules be incompatible? Or do I need to make some adjustments to the server settings?

Can you please help me troubleshoot this issue?

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Canberk,

The T130 is limited to using Unbuffered Dimms (Udimm) only, as specified on page 19 here., so Registered Dimms (Rdimms) are not supported.

Let me know if this helps.

Both of your Hynix and Samsung modules are UDIMM.  They won't work when you mixed with Micron RDIMM.  You will need UDIMM memory for your T130.

    Hi,
There are several reasons why your server might not be working with the new memory modules, and they could be both compatibility and configuration related. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    Compatibility:

    1. Review Memory Specifications: Verify if the new Micron modules (MTA18ASF1G72PZ-2G1A2IG) are indeed compatible with your Dell PowerEdge T130 server. This information can be found in the server's documentation or through Dell's official memory compatibility tool. Look for modules listed as "tested and validated" for your specific server model.
    2. Compare Module Specifications: Even if both modules are DDR4-2133 ECC, other technical specifications like rank, density, and type (UDIMM vs. RDIMM) can cause compatibility issues. Compare the specifications of your existing Hynix and Samsung modules with the new Micron modules to ensure they match closely.

    Configuration:

    1. Check Installation: Double-check if you've installed the new modules correctly in the designated memory slots according to your server's manual. Mismatched configurations can prevent the server from booting.
    2. BIOS Settings: Some servers require specific BIOS settings to recognize certain memory modules. Access the BIOS and look for options related to memory settings, such as memory channel mode, frequency, or voltage. Ensure these settings are compatible with the new modules.
    3. Test Individually: Try installing each new module separately with your existing modules to see if the issue persists. This can help isolate if a specific module is faulty or incompatible.

    Additional Tips:

    • Refer to the Dell PowerEdge T130 User's Manual and Memory Compatibility Guide for detailed information and troubleshooting steps.
    • Make sure your server BIOS is updated to the latest version, as this can sometimes address compatibility issues.
    • Contact Dell technical support if you are unable to resolve the issue yourself. They can provide further diagnostics and assistance.

Remember, mixing memory modules with different specifications can be risky and may lead to instability or system failures. Take caution and ensure compatibility before installing new modules.

    Hello
I also have a Dell T130 and would like to upgrade memory. the question is whether the memory has to be UDIMM or could it also work with RDIMM?

    Best Regards
