PowerEdge 1600SC CPU Upgrade Question

I noticed that too, but having looked at the motherboard I don't see a VRM slot as with the PIII class boards on the 1400SC and 1500SC.  I am ordering a second CPU from a pricewatch.com dealer and getting the heatsink, fan, and clips from Dell.

I wonder if the boxed processor heatsink, fan and clips will do the job. 

I think that you got to be careful about the CPU since it has to match the existing one. In particular, you need to look at the sSpec number which is located on the bottom side of the CPU assembly.  FYI,  mine has the sSpec Number  SL6M7  which corresponds to Intel Product Order Code  BX80532KC2800D .

The boxed processor's heat sink sits properly on the processor but the plastic clip extends way left and caused the hood to slant. Also, I couldn't find where to plug the fan. I ended up ordering a heat sink and clip from Dell.

Do you happen to have the DELL part numbers? does the heatsink comes with the fan as an assembly or I have to order them separately?

Thanks for the information. I'm just confused that since the boxed heat sink works properly, why did you want to order both heatsink and clips from Dell? Why not just a pair of clip?

I think that DELL's heatsink is a much better fit since the fan blows the air perpendicular to the motherboard and this fits the overall case air flow design in which the hot air from the CPU is picked up by the system fan.  Both CPU fan and system fan work in a way as a coupled system.  On the other hand, the boxed CPU wind tunnel design has the fan mounted so that it blows the air parallel to the motherboard.  In this case the flow of the CPU and sytem fans will not be connected. 

The more important part is that the boxed CPU fan socket is of a different type and you won't be able to connect it to the motherboard.  You just have to go with DELL heatsink & fan assembly  and clips on this upgrade.

I bought a boxed Xeon to upgrade. I had to get the heatsink and fan from Dell because the MB has a non-standard fan connector and Dell won't sell the fan without the heatsink. Anyway, I kept the Intel heatsink, clips and "wind tunnel" assembly and my 2nd CPU runs consistently 8-10 degrees cooler than the cpu with the Dell heatsink and fan. Just FYI

FYI, Dell uses non-standard fan connectors. I replaced all Dell fans due to excessive noise level. There are fans that connect to the 4 pin power supply (e.g. the power supply for hard drive). So the fan connector is not a problem. If what I read is correct, you can go with standard equipment, just need to find an adapter to connect you fan to existing power supply.

A member of my department has two 1600SCs (service tag HFG8J31).  A while back he ordered a second heatsink assembly and matching clips from Dell for each server.  He only received the heatsink assemblies, not the clips, but he's been too busy to follow up.

Now we're told (when we call the Dell spare parts number) that we can't order the clips (p/n 83MGJ) except by buying a complete CPU assembly (processor, heatsink with fan, thermal gel, and clips). I had the impression from this thread that the clips and heatsink assemblies were sold separately from the CPU.

Could someone please confirm that?
