Unable to Install Windows 2003 Server on Dell Poweredge 1950 II with a Perc 5/I Raid Controller

Hello,

I have been trying to install Windows 2003 on a PE 1950 II with a Perc 5/I controller using raid-1.

It doesn't work with booting the Server 2003 disk (no hard drive found), also tried using F6 and a floppy drive with the perc 5/i driver, same problem.

In the RAID Bios (Ctrl-R) I created the VD Chose both drives, initialized it,  and ran a Consitancy Check.

After creating the virtual disk in the raid bios, it says "space available 0mb" under "disk group 0 properties".  However "virtual disk properties" shows the full size the RAID should be.  Is there a step I am missing?

On bootup:

Bios is at 1.10 2.70

Power Edge Exanpanble Raid V 5.0.1 Build Dec 1 2005

PERC 5/I 6.0.2-003

I have tried using he USB Flash utility to load the driver and sipstream to add the drivers into the setup DVD Disk.

Am I not using the correct driver?

Thanks in advance for any help

"But it asked again for for another driver for the same RAID controller"

This is the biggest failure of the USB utility.

Make sure you are using this driver ('hard drive' version - run to extract before use):

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-1950?driverId=FF6F6&osCode=WNET&fileId=3176121136&languageCode=en&categoryId=SF

SBUU back to version 5.5 is in DVD format ... here is the last CD version (need to copy/paste link below - forum doesn't like FTP links):

ftp://ftp.dell.com/secure/sysman/om_5.5.0_sbuu_a00.iso

Again, for SBUU, you MUST have 2003 SP2 media.

For compatibility (some drivers and deployment options require SP2) and licensing (with Microsoft licensing for deployment), SP2 is required.  If you don't have SP2 media and want to install with that version, then it MUST be installed directly from the OS CD.

"I am booting the utility first and after going through the options in the utility's GUI, Windows Disk will be inserted.. the utility should be booted all the way to the end regardless of the version of the Windows, is that right? "

Yes ... along the way, you will be told to choose the OS you are installing.  If your disk doesn't have SP2, it will kick it back out.

Hi,

Is there any other thing I can try or I should give up?

DON'T use the USB Key Prep tool (I still don't recall suggesting a "USB utility" - seems like I suggested NOT using it).

You can try this installation utility - it is older, but it will probably still require SP2 media: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-1950?driverId=R146318&osCode=WNET&fileId=2731115812&languageCode=en&categoryId=SM

What is your BIOS version at?

For nLite ...

Copy files from Windows CD ... check. Download the hard drive version of the driver, RUN IT to extract its contents to a folder.  Run nLite, follow the prompts.  When you get to the spot that you need to specify drivers to load, choose Multiple Driver Folder (NOT Single Driver), select ALL that are presented in the list, then select TextMode (NOT PnP).  INI files are not drivers - it should NOT be asking for INI's.  INF files are drivers files.

Give up?  I wouldn't.  It's not like it can't be done - it just depends on how much time you want to spend to get it right.

Wooow,

Finally, I made it through using the nLite.. and it was only one click that keep separating me from getting everything right:

Very embarrassing I know!! Now everything makes sense to me. Windows is now up and running on the PowerEdge 1950... Thanks Flash1932 for your kind support. This made my day!!
