Dell EMC ML3 Tape Library compatibility with virtualization hypervisors
Hello,
I would like to ask whether ML3 Tape Library (with SAS 12Gbps HBA external controller on Dell R740 host) is compatible with VMWare ESXi or KVM hypervisor. Is it possible to use the ML3 Tape Library from a guest operating system (Windows 10) running on VMWare ESXi or KVM?

Hello miro7,
With vmware tape drives and autoloaders are not supported. Here is the link to Partner Verified and Supported Products & if you look an ML3 is not listed. https://dell.to/2OW9pse
You might be able to get it to work, however if you have any issues, we will validate that the ML3 is working as it should

Thank You for Your answer about VMWare. As I understand it, the answer is that VMWare is not officially supported for this tape library but it may possibly work.
And do you have any idea about using ML3 from a KVM guest (Windows)? I guess this would not work and is not supported, but I would be grateful if anyone had an answer or comment on this.

Hello miro7,
With any guest OS result vary & are not reliable. I would say you might be able to use a KVM and guest windows OS & it might be seen. We haven’t test this setup so I am not sure of any road blocks that you may face.
