5820 bios update 2.0.2 Jan 20 stuck at 0%

I had to disable the dell command update. It keeps trying to install the critical 5820 bios update Version 2.0.2  dated 20 Jan 2020.

The bios installer reboots and then gets stuck at 0%. I have reset the bios to factory settings. Bit locker is not on.

This has happened about six times, 4 via the dell command update and twice trying to manually update the bios from the installer on the support page for the service tag. The last time it failed I went home at 5 PM and it was still at 0 % at 8 AM. I have previously updated the bios on this workstation 3 or 4 times with no problems. I have made no hardware changes.  Fortunately, I can hit the power button and restart and get back into windows.

Has anyone else experiences this? Any solutions?

Thanks,

Mark

What can one do if their 5820 has an RTX 8000 video card and it only has displayport outs on the back, no hdmi.  So not sure if I can hook up an old monitor since old monitors don't have displayport ins.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Same issue here.  No access to an old monitor (except VERY old VGA), and I know that unplugging the monitor completely will prevent the BIOS update from executing.  Kind of a strange issue.  I've never had problems like this with any other computer.

To answer my own question 2 above this post...  I don't have HDMI outs so was worried about hooking an old monitor up to this computer with only displayport outs....  I found an displayport to hdmi cable on Amazon for around 10 bucks.  Ran the Dell updater, and it worked!  Didn't even need to do the usb stick/F12 thing.  Worked right in windows with a reboot.  Was very relieved to see it break the 0% barrier immediately!  Thanks to those that suggested this!

FYI the HDMI->VGA "dongle" worked!  I plugged the converter in the back of the computer and the BIOS actually completed headless, which I was never able to do before.  So I guess that dongle tricked the computer into thinking there was a monitor attached.  I plugged in the 4K monitor after the computer restarted (about 10 minutes) and all was good!  I did confirm that the newest BIOS had been installed.

Question.... when I try to update the bios from 2.0.1 to 2.6.1, is it recommended to update in steps.... i.e. 2.0.1 -> 2.4.0 etc.?

I'll be using the low res monitor "solution."

I've never done a "stepped" BIOS update like that on any PC I've ever had. I've never had a problem jumping from my current version (no matter how old) to the most recent version.  I assume the BIOS update routine should alert you if that would be a problem.

You're correct, typically you can just update to the latest version.

I have seen some odd ball upgrades that require you to follow a specific upgrade path for the upgrade to install correctly.  It's wasn't each step but specific upgrades.

For example if you were at 1.5 and wanted to upgrade to 2.5 > you had to upgrade to 1.6 then you could skip all the way to 2.5.  Not common, but something to be aware of.

Seems to be now a wide spread issue. We have experienced it on Precision Mobile Workstations.

I fixed it.

In  my case Precision 5820 with Bios from 2.0.2 to 2.8.0. stuck in 0%

As I read a number of posts, I  did two things. No sure which one (or if both)  allowed the update:

1-Disconnect video cable of any higher than HD (1920x1080) resolution monitor. I just left a regular HD monitor connected. (many are reporting troubles of the bios updater, that uses a GUI getting stuck because of this)

2- From Dell updates, I saved the bios firmware file 5820T_2.8.0.exe in a FAT32  formatted USB stick (no bootable needed) and reset computer hitting F12 when  the DELL logo shows. This gets you in the BIOS, then in the boot mode menu I switched from Secure Boot with UEFI to Legacy, you get some warning that warns you you may not boot, etc... but ok.  Now reset again the same. Let the USB stick connected during the process.

NOTE: The reset process sometimes gets stuck like trying to power on then off, and so. For that hold the power button 10 seconds or so to force power down, then turn on.

Once  again in the BIOS go to the update BIOS firmware menu and select your USB stick  and the 5820T_2.8.0.exe file (You may have a newer version) and update. Bingo, no 0% stuck anymore. There will be quite a few BIOS updates as there are multiple pieces to update, so you will see the bar going from 0% to 100% multiple times. Once is done, it will reset again, and you MUST go back with F12 to the BIOS (the computer wont boot otherwise)  and switch the boot mode to Secure with UEFI. At this time you can verify in the lower part of the window that the BIOS version is finally 2.8.0. Remove your USB stick, reset again and done. Not sure if is just my computer but I needed to be patient with the resets, and force off sometimes (see my NOTE above)

***************************************************************

P.S. In a related note: The reason I wanted to update my BIOS in the first place is because the computer started to accelerate the fans for no reason (no apparent heating or CPU/resources load)  The noise all day long was crazy. After the update (1 hour ago), so far is gone. No idea why this start happening, or if now the BIOS update was the fix, I also noted that stopped when I disconnected my 4K monitor to do the BIOS update (perhaps by chance), but now fans are silence with monitors back (I hope stays that way)

NOW I GOT A REAL SOLUTION FROM A DELL TECHNICIAN !!

SOLUTION:
Activate "Legacy Option ROMS" and deactivate "Secure Boot Enable" in BIOS

Secure Boot -> Secure Boot Enable -> Secure Boot Enable (Disabled)

General -> Advanced Boot Options -> Enable Legacy Option ROMS (Enabled)

As soon as at least BIOS version 2.4.0 is installed, these workarounds are no longer necessary.
