5820 bios update 2.0.2 Jan 20 stuck at 0%

I had to disable the dell command update. It keeps trying to install the critical 5820 bios update Version 2.0.2  dated 20 Jan 2020.

The bios installer reboots and then gets stuck at 0%. I have reset the bios to factory settings. Bit locker is not on.

This has happened about six times, 4 via the dell command update and twice trying to manually update the bios from the installer on the support page for the service tag. The last time it failed I went home at 5 PM and it was still at 0 % at 8 AM. I have previously updated the bios on this workstation 3 or 4 times with no problems. I have made no hardware changes.  Fortunately, I can hit the power button and restart and get back into windows.

Has anyone else experiences this? Any solutions?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi, comming back from holiday's and reading your post i immediately disabled bios updates in the dell command app. But after more than two weeks without usage the win10 on my 5820 suggested some updates. I checked them and no mention of bios/firmware 2.4.0, so i did a restart to update a windows KB4568831.

The bios update 2.4.0 somehow sneeked into this an my 5820 was stuck a 0 % again! Lukily i could once again power off and restart. Then again changed to lower resolution monitor an the bios  update 2.4.0. ran without problems.

Dell please step up here, this issue is known since more than have a year and every new bios updates on 5820 with hd monitor gets stuck. This are high end workstations and this basic failures where not commen to us with the other workstations. Really disappointing!

Interesting. My Precision 5820 was also bricked by update 2.4.0 on 8/6. After the progress bar sat at 0% for several hours, Dell recommended powering the system off. She never came back up after that, no matter what else we tried. The PSU's BIST worked just fine, so Dell scheduled a motherboard dispatch.

I was surprised how quickly Dell managed to arrange a repair in the midst of this pandemic, and I have no complaints about either the Dell support rep or the UNISYS tech. Nevertheless, I can't imagine that replacing motherboards due to a BIOS update is a great use of time or money for anyone involved. Hopefully Dell can figure out why this is happening.

I am having the same issue but I do not have a low res monitor lying around. Does the system need a monitor plugged in at all to update? Can I just power down my system, unplug the monitor, start the system back up and give it 20 minutes?

I just got it to work. Restart your computer and push F12 at Dell screen. In the menu choose to update BIOS and choose the file manually and it will work. You do not need to have it on a flash drive. I have a HD monitor and it worked.

Please use low resolution monitor, or the latest July 2020 BIOS 2.4.0.

I confirmed the F12+USB driver(FAT32, non-bootable) method worked like a charm with a HD(2K) monitor by updating from 2.0.2 to 2.4.0. Maybe stuck at 100% flash progress bar, but it is OK to restart it forcibly. The mode of MB is 0X8DXD with legacy bios config.

However, another 5820 does not have the luck, which has a UHD(4K) monitor and the mode is 06JWJY with UEFI config. I have tried almost every method in the thread except the ctrl+esc didn't bring "BIOS Reconvery" interface, all stuck at 0%.

Guess what,@kyle65432! I tried the idea, it doesn't work for this combination, [UHD(4K) monitor (of course unplugged) +  06JWJY MB mode with version 2.2.0 + UEFI]. I don't understand why a BIOS update requires a display screen.

I had the same problem going from BIOS version 2.2.0 to 2.4.0 on a Dell 5820 Precision Workstation. It finally worked when I swapped out my Dell 4k monitor with a 2k monitor.

This worked for me:

1 - I downloaded the Bios update from dell's site.

2- Lower my monitor resolution in windows config (right click on desktop + display config)

3- I executed by right clicking and choosing "execute as administrator".

4- Done.

* I have secure boot disabled and legacy roms enabled but I don't know if that is really matters.

Same issue with T5820 update from

                    V2.0.1 -> V2.0.2

                                -> V2.2.0

                                 -> V2.4.0

I have a T5820 with a 4K monitor and a 2K monitor with UEFI and Secure Boot ON.

The fix is to disconnect the 4K monitor(the key) and use the 2K monitor with the FW update on the USB key(may not be necessary).

Step that I used to fix the BIOS update issue

reboot an at the Dell logo during boot select At boot menu select the option to BIOS Flash update

Select firmware off the USB installed.

Update flash went from V2.0.1 to V2.4.0

System update flash an after it complete it reboots the system

Confirmed the BIOS level is at V2.4.0 by rebooting the system and entering into "System Setup" by pressing at the Dell logo while the system was rebooting.

As other has pointed out I believe the key is disconnecting the HD(4K) monitor for BIOS update.

Thank you. Finally I have updated the Firmware to 2,4. My Precision 5820 stopped every time I have tried to upgrade it. My 27” (U2720Q) monitor was connected every time I have tried. That was all the problem. I have connected an old 27” model monitor (2K) and It worked PERFECT. My problem also was the 4K monitor as some of you posted. Thank you!!!!

I have had this problem for months and your tech support folks can't seem to figure it out.

It made no sense to me that the BIOS won't update because of the type of monitor, because this implies that it will not recognize a different monitor. In other words, how would the BIOS know which monitor you will attach in the future.

For me, ziling's post triggered it. I disabled secure boot in the bios and reran the Dell update. Instant success, no delay. I hope this works for everyone.
