Precision 3630 GPU Upgrade Inquiry
Hi,
Sorry to bother everyone, but I was looking to upgrade my GPU. According to Dell (link below), it's compatible with "nVIDIA GeForce series 20 (RTX2060 SI, RTX 2080B/ RTX 2080 Super)". Those were released in 2019, so my question is, why can't I install a nvidia series 30? Doesn't it have the same ports?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you have any idea what size PSU you have installed in the 3630? This page at Green PCGamers may help.

You can use any graphics card as long as it fits, and as long as your power supply can provide enough power with the right connectors. The series doesn't matter. It probably lists those graphics cards because they were current when the system was released

Hi @b0ardnutz, I have the same pc and also looking at upgrading gpu. I currently have 2 nvidia quadro p1000s, but wondering if I can swap one for an nvidia 30 series.
Did a 30 series fit your machine in the end, and was the additional PSU needed?
thanks!

For anyone stumbling across this thread, I’m pretty positive that you can use a 3080 in it. Also, anyone seeing this and worrying about the size of gpu that will fit- I have an MSI 2070 Armor in mine and an EVGA 800 watt power supply. The MSI 2070 armor is quite chunky for a 2070 measuring in at 295 x 140 x 51mm. A minimal amount of dremeling was needed for it to fit so I could get the swing out portion to close all the way. Length wise it was also extremely tight. Anything smaller than the dimensions above will fit length wise. But depending on the width of your graphics card of choice, you may still need to modify the case slightly.

Your question is entirely valid, and it's a common one for individuals looking to upgrade their GPUs. While newer NVIDIA GeForce series 30 (RTX 30xx) GPUs have the same physical PCIe connectors as their predecessors, there are several factors to consider when upgrading a GPU in a pre-built system like the Dell Precision 3630:
Power Supply (PSU) Compatibility: One of the most critical factors is the power supply. Newer GPUs often have higher power requirements. The PSU in your Dell Precision 3630 may not provide enough wattage or have the necessary PCIe power connectors to support a more power-hungry GPU. Series 30 GPUs often require more power than their Series 20 counterparts.
Physical Size: The physical dimensions of the GPU can also be a limiting factor. Some high-end GPUs, especially those with large coolers or custom designs, may not fit in smaller PC cases like the Precision 3630. You'll want to ensure that the GPU you're considering fits comfortably within the available space.
BIOS and Firmware Compatibility: Pre-built systems like Dell computers often require BIOS or firmware updates to add support for newer hardware. These updates may not be available immediately upon the release of new GPU series. Dell may need to release a BIOS update to support Series 30 GPUs. Check Dell's support website for any available updates.
Driver Compatibility: Ensure that the latest NVIDIA drivers are compatible with both your GPU and your operating system. Sometimes, new GPUs require driver updates for optimal performance and compatibility.
Warranty and Support: Upgrading the GPU in a pre-built system like the Precision 3630 can affect your warranty. Be sure to check the terms and conditions of your warranty to understand any potential impact.
Dell's Compatibility List: While the Precision 3630 may have been listed as compatible with certain Series 20 GPUs by Dell, this does not necessarily mean that it won't support Series 30 GPUs in the future. Dell may release compatibility updates in the form of BIOS updates.
Given these considerations, here's what you can do:
Check your PSU's wattage and available PCIe power connectors to ensure they meet the requirements of the Series 30 GPU you're considering.
Measure the available space in your PC case to ensure the GPU physically fits.
Visit Dell's support website and check for any BIOS updates or information regarding GPU compatibility with Series 30 GPUs.
Monitor the NVIDIA website for driver updates and ensure they are compatible with your desired GPU and operating system.
Contact Dell's customer support for specific guidance on upgrading your GPU and to inquire about any available compatibility updates.
While the physical PCIe slot is consistent, these other factors can significantly impact the compatibility of a new GPU. Upgrading a GPU in a pre-built system like the Precision 3630 may require careful consideration and additional steps to ensure a successful upgrade.

If it helps: The 3630 can also take RTX 4000 and 5000, GDDR5/GDDR5X.

Which RTX 4000 series cards will fit? Needing to place an RTX-4070 TI or TI super or TRX-4080, for VR application.

If you're looking more into the series other than specifically 4000 or 5000, you'll need to measure how much space if you have. Then, if you're looking at a specific card Google its dimensions. Wattages and PSU requirements can also be Googled.
Doesn't mean for sure that it's not out there, but I couldn't find documentation as to max dimensions for PCIe cards. May be somebody will chime in that owns a 3630.
