Did you purchase an genuine Dell battery as that does make a difference? Try a reset which may help. Disconnect the battery and unplug the adapter. Then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Now reconnect everything and try again.

The laptop is 9 years old and there are no real replacement batteries available. Lots of scams online with batteries. Return it and get your money back if you can. See this--

It's time to buy a new laptop.

Thanks for getting back to me. It was brought through Dell outlet more recently than that and so the 2 yr warranty only elapsed in June. I'm wondering if I just sign back up to Dell, if they can fix it. It feels better for the environment than just replacing.

Dell don't sell them any more so it's purchased through a second party. They say they are genuine (and the look identical to the original) but I can't be sure. The reset you mentioned above didn't work. Only now it's saying no battery is detected, even with the original in. It works with the AC cord in though at least.
