Precision 5510 Will not Boot with Lid Open

Hello,

I've been having a very strange issue for a while now with my Precision 5510 running Ubuntu 20.04.  I have a WD19TB dock that I use almost exclusively with the laptop.  However, some time ago the computer began to refuse to boot if not docked or if the laptop lid is open (even when docked).  If I try to power on with the lid open I get the Dell BIOS logo but it just hangs and never boots.

I've tried numerous solutions that seemed tangentially related (though most errors seem to be the reverse - the docking station/external monitors not working).  I've updated all the BIOS/firmware for all the devices (fwupdmgr reports nothing to be updated), system and packages are all up-to-date... yet the issue persists.  My laptop has effectively become a desktop - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Basic System Information (can provide anything else needed):

- Dell Precision 5510

- Ubuntu w/ Linux Kernel 5.11.0-41-generic

- Using NVIDIA drivers for discrete GPU

If you wish to Enable or Disable this feature, perform the following steps:

Note: When the Power On Lid Open option does not appear in the BIOS, your computer does not support this feature.
  1. Restart the computer, when the Dell logo appears, press F2 to go into the Setup menu.
  2. Depending on your BIOS version, either:
    • Touch or click Power.
    • Touch or click the plus sign to the left of Power Management.

  3. Depending on your BIOS version, either:
    • Touch or click Power on Lid Open to toggle between enabling or disabling this feature (Figure 1).

  4. Touch or click Apply or Apply Changes and then OK (when offered).
  5. Touch or click Exit, the computer will reboot.

Thanks for the suggestion: unfortunately there is no option for “Power on Lid Open”.  In the power management menu there is:

  • AC Behavior
  • Auto On Time
  • USB Wake Support
  • Wake on WLAN
  • Block Sleep
  • Peak Shift
  • Advanced Battery Charge Configuration
  • Primary Battery Charge Behavior

None of which have anything in them relating to the lid state.
