Precision 7680 - damaged screen replacement
Hi,
The 1920x1200 LCD screen on my 7680 seems to have somehow taken an impact and is now suffering from damaged, white pixels in one corner. Not sure Dell warranty covers accidental damage?
If I were to replace myself, anyone know if it's possible just to replace the LCD rather than the whole screen/lid assembly?
I see the assembly for sale and official instructions to replace, but but nothing on taking apart and putting in new LCD only. Asking prices for the lid are in excess of £400 on eBay, so would rather try to avoid that if I can.

No, the warranty does not cover accidental damage - only an insurance plan like complete care would.
It looks like the display assembly is designed to be replaced as a unit -- if the system doesn't have a touchscreen, it may also be possible to replace just the display panel, but expect that to be a difficult process, as it's very likely the assembly is glued together. Note that most sellers won't replace a damaged LCD once it ships -- so though it may seem less expensive upfront to buy just the panel, one slip during disassembly or reassembly could turn that into false economy.

@ejn63 Thanks. I ended up getting an out of warranty repair which Dell were very quick with, but the new display has quite a significant drop off in brightness and whiteness, and isn't great at all for design apps. Guess which one it is out of the three in the photo! Wish I'd just kept the damaged screen. The yellowness is particularly jarring.

Another photo between the two Precisions. New replacement panel on the right.
I've noticed that the newer panel spec is different. BOE0A34 against AUO18A7 for the original. Are Dell just using cheaper, duller IPS, poor colour reproduction panels now? Dell support don't seem convinced there's an issue.

Turned out the Dell engineer has killed my high spec precision laptop. It started freezing up soon after I posted this topic. Laptop had been solid for two years. Had a look inside and one of the DIMMs was incorrectly fitted - almost forced into place with one side not clipped in. Either the engineer broke the memory module, or maybe the motherboard itself.
Finally today, the laptop gave up completely. Can't even get it to start.
