Serious filesystem/drive and windows performance problems
I have discovered a series of serious and consistent problems occurring on five different high-end Precision workstations. These issues persist even after numerous laptop exchanges and numerous Windows reloads. Latest result is that Dell ATS group has determined that it's a Windows problem, but after 11 hours with 4 Microsoft techs, I cannot get anybody to help out and Microsoft says in have (multiple) bad hard drives. Here are the symptoms:
- Most serious issue is when Windows cannot recognize my (internal or external) drives. I am not privy to all the troubleshooting results, but techs tell me that BIOS detects the drives, but for some reason Windows does not detect the drives. This has happened randomly, not necessarily under stressed load on the filesystem, but I literally can watch as my apps are functioning normally and then suddenly the drive disappears and data cannot be accessed. I believe (I'm guessing) and this occurrence has CAUSED many of the following issues, as a result of corrupted data caused when the drives suddenly disappear.
- Windows pauses for long period of time before responding to WINDOWS key, CTRL keys, mouse drags slowly and disappears and very slow to execute apps. This happens mostly after a freshly booted system for several minutes, but also seems happen while copying data from drive to drive.
I know this is very little to go on, however this is very serious and causes corrupted data and tests my patience because I spend 90% of my time not working, but tracking down Windows issues. The current system is Precision 7770 with 64GB memory, i9-12950HX processor, NVIDIA RTX A5500 GPU, so there's plenty of processing power, but Windows performs so poorly I might as well have spend $29 for a toy laptop instead. Yes I'm frustrated after 11 months since I bought the initial system.
Does anybody else have similar issues?
Does anybody have a hint as to how I can identify these corrupted files so I can remove them?
Does anybody have an idea how to troubleshoot these issues so they do not continue?
Any help would be highly appreciated. Dell ATS is refusing to work the issue any longer because they believe this is a Windows problem. Any assistance or guidance from other Dell users would be helpful. Thank you.

First things first run diagnostics, F12 at boot, watching for any drive errors. It sounds like a drive problem especially if you have HDDs primarily. It could be a weak CMOS battery which is hard to believe on a new system but not impossible. And depending on the make of your HDD/HDDs go to the manufacturer's web page such as WD, Samsung, etc. They usually have software that can test a hard drive available for free. This page at PC Mag has more information on HDD testing.
Of course it could also be a virus and I would suggest running a check on your system to verify integrity. I am not sure which AV program you have but at the least run Windows Security and possibly download Malwarebytes as well for additional testing.

HI, JOcean, sorry I should have stipulated these were SSDs, both internal and external. And yes, Dell techs have run pre-boot logs and run full log reports and looked at event histories for apps and system, but I do not know what to look for in those logs. I have however, looked at BIOS after a drive goes invisible, and the drives DO show, but Windows cannot see them. Hope this helps...

UPDATE: random drive disappearing -- is occurring right now. Trying to get Microsoft to look at this. See attached. Drive is internal SSD 4tb. Both and E: SSDs randomly disappear, obviously causing my APPs to crash.
Insight anyone? troubleshooting steps? BIOS shows drives are actually plugged in.

This morning, booting up still showed the internal SSD drive missing.
I rebooted in SAFE MODE, and drive was accessible, and rebooting into normal mode, the drive is still accessible.
Did SAFE MODE unlock something to make the drive accessible again? Just lucky coincidence? Is there further troubleshooting I can do? This problem is random and cannot be replicated, so I have no confidence that it will not happen again. This has happened to both and E: drives multiple times, both are 4tb SSDs (internal).
Thanks to Dell-CARES for the suggestion about SAFE MODE.
