Upgrading GPU on Precision M6800
I have an older version of this laptop that has a Nvidia Quadro K3100M and an i7-4910MQ. I’m wanting to upgrade my gpu but I would like some assistance. I was thinking maybe a gtx 1080 but I don’t think my computer can handle it without a motherboard upgrade. I could use some help.
Thanks.

I am renewing this discussion to find out if anyone has managed to get an M5000M/M4000M GPU to work. Like other users, I am unable to get the card started despite having followed the driver installation procedures through NVcleaninstall and signed the drivers correctly.

@ sentenza77 bonjour.

@sentenza77 Did you ever get it to work? I'm tempted but without evidence that it officially works, don't know it's worth the effort.

77 Yes I built a graphics unit from firepro6100 to m4000m and ran it with boost software in m6800 laptop without changing the light dissipator. And the temperature when the pressure reaches 68 and the CPU reaches 70

@lanlron To configure docking station settings in the BIOS of a Dell M6800, you need to access the BIOS setup during boot and look for options related to USB configuration or docking settings. Ensure that the necessary settings for USB-C or Thunderbolt connections are enabled for proper functionality of the docking station.

@JamesJAB1 Thanks for all your GPU info. My opinion on the heatsink/fan issue is I'd never run the M6800 without a cooling pad. This is a desktop replacement not something you'd use on your lap. Any heavy graphic applications would need some extra cooling help. Best cooling pad/solution out there is the IETS GT500. It destroys any thermal build up.

Hi, I have Precision M6800 with Quadro K3100M. I bought second hand from Ebay Quadro K5100M and installed it, but the computer boot up with black screen. Then I installed back the original K3200M and it powered up without problems. The icons on the the desktop then were arranged in the center of the screen, but the resolution was normal. The computer had probably tried to start up in VGA mode but there was nothing on the screen. My bios is the latest version A26 (if I remember correctly) and I have never made changes to it. I returned the card to the seller. Do you think that I have missed something like a bios setting or else ? Should not it run straight without any bios changes since it is officially supported by the computer ?

@PlamenP Hi, I've upgraded at least four M6800 laptops with the K5100M with no problems. If I had gotten a black screen on restart I probably would have booted to BIOS (hitting the F2 key at reboot) to see if anything had changed. Like in SATA operations, sometimes with a hardware change the laptop will revert to default RAID config then I would have to change it back to AHCI. So, you may have just gotten a bad GPU on eBay.

Hello, I am wondering if I would have to mod my heatsink to install a GTX 980 in my Precision M6800. If I do, how would I do it
