5100CN Windows 8 64bit

I know there is already a thread that covers a work around, but I'm wondering of there is any progress on this.  I've been using one of these printers for years (actually we had several) and recently just had mine serviced (as I think we hit the 50k mark on pages -- was my office printer now it's the home printer for the family).  It's still working on top condition so replacing it just doesn't economical make sense.

I find it hard to believe that there are drivers for 20 year old HP printers and nothing for support for older Dell printers.

I did manage to get the workaround install to print to the 5130CDN (I think) drivers which does text just fine but printing graphics doesn't work.

If there isn't going to be a driver, can Dell at least put that in plain words on their drivers page...  If it's in development, can we at least know the state of the development.  It can't be that hard to port over the printer driver itself (I used to do hardware development, so I know that it shouldn't take that much).

Hello GARYWSMITH,

There are currently no plans to release additional drivers beyond Windows 7 as the unit has reached end of life. There are a few work a rounds you can try. First would be using the Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode, please see the first link below. The second would be using the Dell Open Print driver, please see the second link below. It may have a reduced feature set but still functions for a large majority of uses.

Anyone? It seems kind of silly that Dell won't even give an official answer on if/when the drivers will be completed. Can they at least update their driver compatibility site to say "ain't gunna happen" at least. I have 1 Windows 7 box left just for printing

In the description, it says "Monochrome LAser"..

  1. Would you expect this open driver to support colors on W8.1?
  2. In what situations would you expect this driver would not work ?
  3. What reduced feature set are we talking about?
