No need to buy your inkjet cartridges from Dell

I too have bought refill kits for my ink cartridges, and they worked pretty great (the only hard part is getting the lid off the cartridge the first time).  I got them from a different company though, called 4inkjets.  Their specific link for the A940/A960 is:  http://store.yahoo.com/4inkjets/dea9prsu.html

Note I don't work for them and certainly get no kickbacks, but have had success with them.  I'm sure other refill kits for the Lexmark/Dell work equally well.

Cool, thanks, I'll check it out.

The ones I got came with tools to get the lid off, so it wasn't too bad...and the company was local so it only took 1 day.  Same number of refills as the ones you talked about.

Brian

Try one of the two websites I posted. They both use the same refill kit and you do not have to pull the top off of the cartridge with this kit. It took me about 5 minutes to fill up my black cartridge the first time I tried it, and I had to read the instructions!

Brian,

I checked out the website you mentioned above and by the picture it looks like the same brand of refill kit I used. I used "InkTec" brand of refill kit. But I didn't have to remove the top. The kit comes with a small hand drill to drill a small hole in the top of the cartridge which is where you fill the ink. Maybe they make different models! I bought mine from www.1ink.com and I highly recommend them because of their quick shipping and their generous return policies.

Ok, I see, you're talking about color ink. I haven't done color yet. With black you just drill a little hole in the top and the instructions say to just leave it open. So I don't think the ink dries up. I haven't had any problems so far with the hole open. I thought you'd have to cover it up too, but the instructions specifically say not to cover it. But I haven't tried the color cartridge yet, so that is the one I assume your talking about. So how difficult was it to open the top the first time and once open, how easy is it to open it the next time you need to refill the cartridge?

Thanks B. When I run out of color ink, I'll follow your tips. I appreciate it.

Re: Color cartridge, there is a little tiny slot on the front of the blue lid.  Insert screwdriver and the front will lift up.  The plastic lid will bend slightly but this is OK.  Then there are 3 little plugs further back from where you lifted up that hold the ink in for each color.

They show that you can just slide the screwdriver around the edge of the lid and it should come up BUT it was just a little more tricky than that.

You just need to push the tool all the way in as far back as it will go under the lid and gently work it up and down til the plugs release.  A little patience and voila, I was in business.  I managed to do it all without getting my hands dirty, until the final step:  they suggest you  s u c k  a little bit of ink out of the bottom to get it flowing.  The lid goes back on with great ease and should be easy to remove the next time.

By the way another quick tip, if you fill the 3 color inks and and the print quality is still questionable (mine was printing everything kinda green), run the cleaning utility or print a picture that is entirely the color you are having trouble with.  For example I determined the red ink was not coming out, thus the greenish (blue + yellow) tones.  It probably dried out a bit near the nozzle when it was near empty.  I printed a small picture that I had of a bright red car two times and VOILA, everything was perfect  :-)

good luck

Oh, I see.  Interesting  :-)  Mine came with a little mini screwdriver to pop the top off instead, and then you stick the individual syringe in where each color goes.  Then when you put the top back on it plugs the 3 holes back up.

If you drill a hole doesn't it allow the cartridge then to dry out?

anyway Inktek works good!  and they have pretty good instructions.

No problem.

I just filled my black ink for the first time yesterday and it was even easier than the color one, using the "drill" tool that you explained. Works great!
