Footnote Options in Word 2K

How can I change the position of my footnote separator line? Rather than appearing at the left margin where I am used ot seeing it, the line seems to be indented 1 inch. This looks pretty strange since the first line of the footnote text is indented only 0.5 inch. I tried going to "Footnote Options" but can't figure out how to move the line.

Switch to Normal View. From the View menu, choose Footnotes, and the note pane appears. In the Footnotes box, select Footnote Separator from the drop-down list. You can use the increase or decrease indent icons on the Formatting toolbar to adjust the indent.

Sorry but that does not seem to work. If I play around with the tab ruler it plays havoc with the rest of the system. BW, the current FN separator has no obvious tab controlling it.

Joe,

Don't use the ruler bar to adjust the indent. Use the Increase Indent icon on the formatting tool bar. Make certain you choose Footnote Separator before doing this. It will indent your line separator in 1/2 inch increments.

Allan:

The Increase Indent icon moves the separator even farther from the margin. Oddly, the Decrease Indent button moves it back, but only to the point where it started. However, for no reason I could think of I changed the Special Indentation in the Normal Style and eliminated the 1" indent for the first line. To my astonishment this seemed to fix the problem. Same thing happens if I simple change the paragraph setting in the same way. Thanks
